Encourages listening skills
This was a great book to tie in with the listening sense and listening skill. We loved this book and enjoyed going on our own listening walk after reading.

What a sweet book!
This is a wonderful book about listening carefully, slowing down, learning from your senses, and taking in the world around you. We use this book when we study the senses and take the kids on a listening walk to see what they can hear, notice, and learn about their surroundings. It is also a great way to teach about mindfulness.

Appropriate for City Life.
This book has great illustrations and teaches kids to listen to the environment around them instead of always making noise. This book is more appropriate for those who live in a city. Most of the things that are listened to include buses, jack hammers, high heels on cement, and cars.... eventually they arrive at a park where they hear woodpeckers, ducks, and bees, but the nature side of things is much shorter. I wish they had included something like laughter of kids in the park playing, or a particular bark from the dog that meant something.... because kids should also pay attention to listening to others and understand those sounds reveal much about a person and their feelings. At least the quietness of her father in the walk was attributed to him thinking. I like how the book ends in asking kids to be quiet and listen to what is around them whether indoors or out. Overall, would be a good book to include in a lesson planing of the senses, especially because it could lead to a "project" of the students sitting in a particular area, being quite, and just listening for what they can hear and writing/drawing it down or sharing etc.

Fundamental resource for early music education
Since purchasing this book, I've used it at the very beginning of the school year with my pre-K and Kindergarten students. The book opens their eyes to all the sounds we may hear on an everyday basis in life. Sounds that may be considered musical or not. But they quickly learn that music is all around us and can be found in the simplest things.

Fun Sounds To Read Aloud
This is our favorite book for beginning readers in our home. Everyone takes a turn making the various funny sounds throughout the walk. So much fun to read aloud! Also it's a good length. A lot of the kids books nowadays seem short on pages but this was a good amount.

Read the Book! Take Your Own Listening Walks!
Back in 1985, when I was pregnant with my youngest child, and the two oldest ones where in elementary school during the day, I had time to spend with my four-year-old son. THE LISTENING WALK was one of our favorite books. We were living then on a nine-acre piece of lovely wooded property in Florida and would often take our own "listening walks" in those woods, paying attention to the sounds around us. That original copy of the book has been lost, but I wanted to revisit the theme and the experience with my grandchildren, especially the two youngest, who just turned five years old.Buy the book, read the book with a child or children you love, and then go take your own listening walks, and do so often. In a world that is often so fast-paced and so loud, it is wonderful to practice listening.

Teaches children to LISTEN to sounds around them
Beautiful book, love the art work by Aliki. Starts with the little girl putting on her walking shoes & walking outside with her dad and dog. Shows the difference between outdoor sounds, busy city sounds and quiet nature sounds. Am looking forward to using it at the birding center to help children listen to the sounds around them. Great for compare & contrast. At the end, she is back in her room & says, "You do not even have to take a walk to hear sounds. There are sounds everywhere all the time. All you have to do is keep still and listen". So cute!!! SO TRUE!!!
