Excellent film spoiled by dreadful DVD quality.
The story is great with a powerful performance from Trevor Howard. The music is good but the whole is spoiled by the quality of the DVD. I remember seeing the film on TV many years ago and I remember the quality as being excellent. With this order, I also bought Tony Palmer's "England, My England" - the story of the much less well-known (at least outside UK) composer Purcell. The quality of this DVD was much better although the acting was not quite so good as Trevor Howard.Under the layers of poor DVD quality, and if you can forgive them, "God Rot Tunbridge Wells" is an excellent, typical Tony Palmer film.

Huum ... I hoped it was better.
The movie is well done, but the quality of the DVD is poor. I saw this movie in TV a few decades ago and the colors were brilliant: in the DVD they are quite poor. I understood the DVD was doubled in Italian, but it is not so. Anyway ... good movie, superb actors and the music is as one expect it to be .... Handel is Handel ... if you love his music you will like the DVD also.

God rot Tunbridge Wells
This is a glorious production characterized by the excellent acting of Trevor Howard and amazing musical performances. It was wonderful to see and hear the marvellous English counter tenor James Bowman performing two arias from Handel's Rinaldo. Handel is depicted in his old age looking back on an interesting and varied life and career. In the realm of musical biographies, it doesn't get much better than this.

The Soft Machine - Alive in Paris 2.3.1970

Soft Machine: Alive in Paris 1970
I first saw and heard Soft Machine live at a free concert at Parliament Hill Fields in 1969. Since then I have always loved the music they produced whilst Robert Wyatt was in the band.I was pleasantly surprised with the good quality of this DVD, having been expecting a black and white, somewhat blurred TV archive but `Alive in Paris 1970' is filmed in colour and is of acceptable picture quality.Filmed at the Theatre de la Musique and broadcast in two parts for a French TV programme, the band on this occasion is augmented by Lyn Dobson on sax, flute, harmonica and vocals. This is a fine Soft Machine performance, full of excellent musicianship and the full spectrum of their sound from raucous free-form to beautifully lyrical melodies and exciting time signatures. High spots for me are the interplay between Mike Ratledge, Robert Wyatt and Hugh Hopper during Hugh's extended fuzz-bass solo on "Eamon Andrews" and Elton Dean's blistering sax solo on "Out-Bloody-Rageous" (apparently this is the first performance of Out-Bloody -Rageous, recorded before its release on the album: Third).`Alive in Paris 1970' is a must for any lover of of Soft Machine - a truly ground-breaking, unique and exciting band who were progressive and definitely not "Prog".
