Love Downton Abbey series. Good acting and interesting characters. Definitely keeps you hooked.

Downton Abbey ... I knew that I wouldn't like it ... dramatic and romantic series just don't interest me that much. I was visiting friends whenone of them strongly recommended the Downton Abbey series. The four of us finished a delicious dinner and all sat down to watch the hour-long Episode One of Season Five. By the end of that hour the other three of us (the Downton Abbey "newbies") were completely hooked! We met for dinner and Downton Abbey once a week until Season Five ended. it didn't take us long to decide that we needed to find out what led up to the events in Season Five. Rather than going through a "Downton Abbey withdrawal until the start of Season Six in January, the four of us (two men and two women) all eagerly decided to continue our Downton evenings by viewing one episode per week. We began by catching up with Episode One of Season One. (Thank you, Amazon Prime!) Downton Abbey has taught us about historical events from 1912 (the sinking of the Titanic) to the 1920's. The cultural transitions from the Edwardian Era to the Roaring Twenties are well demonstrated for both the working class and the upper class. This series has also taken us on a video tour of several parts of Great Britain, again exposing us to both working class homes and jobs, as well as grand estates and the responsibilities and privileges of the entitled classes. There are also several very worthwhile adjunct episodes which introduce the viewers to HIghclere Castle, (the "real" Downton Abbey) and to the culture of Great Britain during that period of time. This series is filled with passion, crises, well-developed personalities, historical fiction and facts, cultural enrichment, and an addictingly well-written story line. My only objection to the series is that this coming season (Season Six) is the final season. Because some of the British accents were difficult for me to understand I I did find that closed captions were sometimes helpful. Each person in our little group is eagerly anticipating the arrival of season Six!Downton Abbey has proven to be a great teaching tool, as well as being a source of great entertainment.

I just got season 5 of Downton Abbey and could not wait to watch. This is such an excellent series but too short. Nine episodes is not enough. This season we finally find out the fate of Edith's lover from the previous season. He had gone to Germany in order to get a divorce from his wife to enable him to marry Edith as you will recall. There are troubled waters ahead for Anna and John Bates over the death of Mr. Green who you'll remember raped Anna in season 4. What happens with these two in season 5 will surprise many fans I'm sure. There are also some surprises in store involving several other characters. I've already watched the entire season but I won't spoil what's coming for those of you who haven't yet. This series is a veritable treasure trove with many wonderful characters played expertly by the cast. If you haven't seen Downton Abbey I highly recommend you check it out. This is without a doubt some of the best entertainment out there. Now that I've watched season 5 I'll have to go back and re-watch the entire series from the start. I never get tired of watching this excellent series and I can't hardly wait for the next season to come out. It's much too long a time in between for such a short series and PBS doesn't show summer repeats of it's series so the only way to truly enjoy the episodes again is either by buying the DVD's or finding it on instant streaming. The only problem I've found with the series in season 5 is that Edith's child has aged a wee too fast for the length of time her lover has been missing and taking into consideration the length of the pregnancy. The child looks quite older than she ought to be but then this is wonderful fiction at it's very best from the wonderful PBS series Masterpiece Theater. I absolutely love Downton Abbey. The only thing I dislike is that now I have to wait a whole year again to see what happens to all our favorite characters.

Season Five more than met my expectations. I really enjoyed the development of the characters this season and actually replayed it almost as soon as I finished watching it the first time. I'm really looking forward to Season Six to see what new love comes for Mary (or return of old love Julian Ovenden in his role), will Edith find some happiness at last, will Lady Crawley ever stop simpering, will Mrs. Crawley accept Lord Merton in the end and his rude and hateful sons get their just desserts, will Mr. & Mrs. Bates finally find some peace and happiness, will we see the marriage of Mr. Carson and Mrs. Hughes or will it already have taken place when Season Six starts? The possibilities for all of the characters are endless and it will be difficult to wait and see how things next work out for them.

Faccio chiarezza per quanto riguarda le edizioni inglesi (quelle "Regno Unito" per intenderci): avendo comprato il cofanetto con le prime tre serie che includeva anche "Christmas at Downtown" pensavo di essere a posto invece ho dovuto poi acquistare a parte un altro DVD singolo (Special for Christmas-"A journey to the Highlands" ovvero quello con la morte di Matthew) per essere al completo. Poi se si compra il cofanetto "Series Four" bisogna comprare anche lo speciale DVD singolo "The London season", e se si compra il cofanetto "Series Five" bisogna comprare un altro DVD singolo ovvero "A Moorland Holiday" per avere la puntata finale ed essere completi. In poche parole: ad ogni serie manca lo speciale di natale che è un singolo DVD a parte.

Es una magnífica serie dramática, que se desarrolla en Gran Bretaña, dentro del seno de la familia aristocrática Crawley y sus sirvientes, en las postrimerías de la época eduardiana (1901/1910), con los más importantes eventos en la historia, teniendo un efecto en sus vidas y en la jerarquía social británica.Tales eventos, representados a lo largo de las temporadas, incluyen las noticias del hundimiento del Titanic; el estallido de la Primera Guerra Mundial, la pandemia de la gripe Española, el Escándalo de Marconi; el periodo de entreguerras y la formación del Estado Libre Irlandés, entre otros hechos de trascendencia mundial. La ambientación y vestuario de la época están exquisitamente representados. Pocas series han logrado el éxito internacional de este estupendo film.
