A worthy successor to the D-5
This speaker delivers solid performance and is a worthy successor to old CVs like the D-5. Its design is sleek and modern, with a taller, slimmer, and deeper form factor than the D-5. It has classic CV red accents, sturdy rubber feet, and a quality grille.Out of the box, the frequency response has a peak around 100Hz and fades out under 60Hz, but EQ adjustments make a significant improvement. With EQ and a powerful amp the bass is impactful, delivering the punch you’d expect from a 12-inch woofer.

Cerwin Vega is Back!
I finally gave up my ~35 year old Cerwin Vega D7s. We have a nice home theater system, and the Wife was finding the large cabinets too dated and beat up. The iconic status of the brand was why I recouped the same $200. on Craigslist that I paid for them in an Austin, TX pawn shop in the early 80's, within 2 days. Those speakers survived many wild Texas State parties, and just kept going with a woofer re-cone. I demoed some BIC PL89s on my 120 watt RMS Denon AVR 1613. Then came the XLS12s. Wow, what a difference. The BIC were configured similar to many popular speakers, with 5" mids and a tweeter, needing a sub for bass. Was running my receiver in "game" or "movie" mode with the PL89s to get full sound, and music just did not sound natural with the 12" BIC sub sounding somewhat flat. While waiting on my sub replacement, a Velodyne 12", I hooked up the CVs on their own and have tested them over the last 24 hours with different types of music. I can tell you that these Cerwin Vegas are exceptional for the money, providing rich, full sound with crystal clear highs/mid,tight, punchy bass-no sub needed. To me, they sound best on the "pure" EQ preset on the Denon. Now I can enjoy awesome music sound all over my 3000 sq. ft. house, without running a separate amped sub. The Denon runs the XLS12s at ~110-113 degrees at 95% volume (loud!) measured from the top with a pyrometer, and that's only ~5 degrees warmer than while running a movie at 60%. I agree with the other reviewer that said these were the best speakers he's ever owned. This is the best sounding, and loudest system I have owned in my 51 years. CerwinVega was recently acquired by Gibson (guitars), and good things are happening. Buy these now before they get popular and more expensive. Ishould thank the guy at acousticsounddesign.com for refusing to replace the damaged BIC PL89 speakers and F12 sub, insisting instead oncanceling the order. He did me a favor :). These CVs may well be the last speakers I ever buy.2.5 years later the Vegas are sounding better than ever! Only problem is, I can't crank 'em up too much without raising the Wife's ire....but when the cat's away... :)Edit 4/2022: This speakers have been pounding away for ~8 years now, and sound as good as the day I bought them. Using the CV center as well. I paid $319 ea. when they were released in 2014, and think they're still a good value at $489 ea in 2022. CV FTW! :)

Bass is lacking for a 12" woofer
Speaker play loud and have good, punchy bass but the deep bass extension is disappointing. I can assure you that these speakers fall off in the bass department with anything less than the advertised low frequency rating of 37Hz. I hope that the sl-series delivers more of the bass extension that Vega's were known for. BTW they are powered by an Onkyo TX-696 receiver with a crown 1502 amplifier.

Man Cave Complete
My husband has wanted these for years and finally bought them. He has his recliner positioned *just so* to get the best sound quality from his new babies. I must say, I'm impressed! The sound quality is fantastic and you can truly hear every single instrument. This has been a great purchase and worth every penny!

Cerwin-Vega is an icon from the past
As we all know - so many creators of electronic products 'price' their items as if they came from the almighty. Had they only realized 'capitalism' was not intended to have everything priced to allow only an small percentage of the population to afford to buy. With 320,000,000 people and growing WHY would anyone price their items high. If items were reasonably priced THEN there would be more buyers; then the item would receive accolades; then there would be more people EMPLOYED to create and sell - get it.So Cerwin-Vega speakers are built very well and priced to allow many to buy them. Their sound is quite good for the price. I admit they are not as good as the 'offers' of the past - however isn't that the way of just about everything ? Remember when they dropped an suitcase from on high to show you it did not break apart ??? ... well the industry made an reverse: 'lets use the computer to design 'just about everything' to fall apart at an interval 'we' choose. The end result an 'throw-away' society. Wasting huge amounts of material resources. If you think this is too opinionated about waste and greed - you may have an point, but, I did buy recently as you see an pair of Cerwin-Vega floor speakers which I knew I would be happy with because of the Cerwin-Vega shelf speakers which still sound outstanding - I've had for the past 28 years.Cerwin-Vega - good job.

Epic!
These are amazing, the classic Cerwin Vega sound I was hoping for. The volume capacity is more than you'll likely need for the average household, but even at low volume the sound is clean and full and it is sound you can feel!

Cerwin Vega Not Just For 5.1
I was a little leery when I chose these speakers for my quad room when I found out they also made a matching sub-woofer. But because of the name I took the chance and bought 4 of these together. After hooking them up to my Sansui QRX-999 (60watts rms times 4)there was no more doubt. Unreal highs with the horn but unbelievable bass from a floor tower that takes up so little space. I have bass reflex speakers 3 times the size that can just keep up with these beauty's. The house shakes and the glasses rattle off the bar but these just keep going. I've listened to a lot of speakers in my time and for the price these are well worth it. And because of the style, the wife likes them too. They are set up in the family room and they match definely. Luckily when I purchased them off of Amazon this spring I got the 4 for under a grand, looks like their catching on.Fraxster
