This sharpener is the absolute best value for your consumer-grade
This sharpener is the absolute best value for your consumer-grade, non-chef knives. Most of us ain't gonna drop a coupla grand on German high-carbon steel or a Japanese sushi-grade santoku, if you did, then this is the WRONG item for you.The rest of us with disposable stuff that's been re-gifted are using low-quality stuff that does the job.All knives get dull, even the good stuff.Professional sharpeners will tell you that the only way to get a great edge is to run it at a perfect 15-20 degree angle on a whetstone. This requires proper preparation of the stone by soaking it for 15 minutes, then carefully running your blade on each side while keeping the stone wet and looking for the perfect burr. Once you've sharpened your knifes, you have to repair the whetstone and dry it on a rack for at least a day...Dude, I've got cheap knives and I'm sure as hell not gonna spend an afternoon massaging them. That's why this sweet little baby is so great. It's cheap, works fast, and is pretty effective. A couple of pulls through the ceramic (I assume) sharpeners and your knife will feel like new. Granted, this item won't create the PERFECT edge, but most of us non-professionals don't need a perfect edge for daily household use.As others have pointed out, the key to using this item is to maintain the blade as vertical as possible while pulling it through the slots. DON'T push down while pulling the blade, just let the weight of the knife do the work. 3-4 pulls through the fine sharpener for slightly dulled knives and you're golden. If you're knives are really dull, pull it through the course slot 3-4 times, then the fine slot 3-4 times, and you'll be amazed by the difference. The soft grip handle makes everything secure and safe.I plan on getting another one of these babies for my barbeque blades.

Sharpen me up
This product works very well and is well worth the cost of purchase. I find it does an excellent job of sharpening my knives, it is easy to use, simple to store and does the job as advertised. It will not last a lifetime, but then at the price, one doesn't expect it to.

This type of knife will work just fine with this sharpener and would probably result in five ...
Sorry to give this one less stars, the caveot is that the placement of the sharpening inserts prevents some knives from having the full length of the blade sharpened if the handle comes right to the sharp edge of the knife. If you look at the knife in the picture you can see that the blade stops short of the handle. This type of knife will work just fine with this sharpener and would probably result in five stars. it is large and really stable on the counter top. Maybe the description should tip off people with knives that have blades to the handle so they don't buy it??? Think this is a good sharpener but just not for my applications.

Satisfied
I own a small restaurant and use this sharpener to keep a usable edge on my knives and that's exactly what it does. It is sturdy and easy to use and my knives are very sharp. Very good sharpener for the money.

Don't waste your money
Works great the first several times you use it, but the ceramic rods develop grooves very quickly. Once that happens, it just dulls the blades instead of sharpening them. The one I bought is about ready to go in the trash.

Far better out there.
If anything it will dull your knives, and there is no way of replacing or cleaning the sharpeners.

A Cut Above The Rest
Wow! Sharpened all of our knives from the butcher block holder in just a few minutes. Did its job as advertised with a very convenient handle to hold things in place. I felt completey safe using this product. For this price, I wasn't expecting this quality. The rough cut and finishing slots worked well in tandem with each other. My wife is a very happy cook again. Happy wife, happy life!

A good value item.
Several tries at using this sharpener were a disappointment so I started to read up on the proper technique for using this sort of device. I learned that a light touch in passing the blade through the honing and sharpening "grooves" would yield better results. Well, this proved to be true. Now that I have refined my technique, I find that I can quickly establish and maintain a reasonably sharp blade on my cutlery. A real knife fancier would probably scoff at my efforts, but for a "average" user this device will more that fit the bill.
