We went all the way the narrow alleys of old Islamic Cairo to get you this authentic, handmade fine piece of historical art. For the past thousand years of Egypt's history, through Mamluk and Ottoman times, the “tentmakers” of old Cairo have produced the likes of this decorative appliqué fabric. Known as Khayamiya textiles, traditional artists in historic Ghuriyya area use Egyptian cotton canvas to hand stitch or quilt Islamic and Pharaonic patterns. In their medieval brick, small shops at Khayamiya Street, they use unique designs of ornaments such as Arabic calligraphy, Qur’anic texts, Pharaonic lotus flower, Whirling Dervishes or Sufi Dancers, and more. They make authentic wall tapestries and pillow cases. The secrets of this art pass through the generations of the families who inhabit the Ghuriyya area surrounded by the oldest mosques and architectural gems in the Middle East. The theme of this wall tapestry or floor cushion cover comes from Ancient Egypt, Pharaonic times. More than seven thousand years ago, Ancient Egyptians worshiped their River Nile and depicted in art the nature around it, especially its unique lotus flower. According to ancient Egyptian mythology the Lotus symbolized the sun, of creation, rebirth and regeneration. The lotus closes at night and sinks underwater. In the morning it re-emerges and blooms again. Thus the flower became a natural symbol of the sun and creation. Nefertem was the god of healing, medicine and beauty and strongly associated with the lotus and often depicted in Egyptian art with a large lotus blossom forming his crown as seen in the picture. Hand wash in cold water or dry clean.
