The Mark Twain of the outdoors
Patrick McManus is one of the funniest writers I've ever read. A modern day Mark Twain. When he's really on his game he can make you laugh before he even gets to the punch line. For instance in SNAKE, the reader knows that Pat's friendly snake is in the crawl space beneath the cabin. The two handy men don't. When they happen to need a short length of rope my eyes began to water, my body to shake and I could barely get to the next pages and the finale.I used to read his work aloud to my wife while she drove. If "me and Retch Sweeney" appeared anywhere near the beginning of any tale, she started laughing and driving erratically before I could get any further. Some of his collections are funnier than others. In addition to this one, I recommend THE NIGHT THE BEAR ATE GOOMBAW.

It's McManus... its fun!
I have read all of his works... I just enjoy his writing style. This one seems more a compilation of his older works - which makes them no less entertaining - but having read Outdoor Life (and the Last Page which he wrote for so many years) I seem to remember some of the stories...Whenever life seems to be getting a bit too serious.... and ya' just need a break.... grab a Mcmanus book and read a story or two....life will soon feel better.

I love Patrick McManus
I love Patrick McManus. His humor is the kind that keeps me chuckling for days. I suspect that those born & raised in the "concrete jungle" will not be able to appreciate the humor, or might find it corny. It very much grows out of a rural, '40's & '50's childhood. A literary critic I am not. But I really can identify with much of his content, having spent my early years in the mountains of Idaho. A fun read.

Very Good Condition, arrived early
This book arrived almost like new, and even earlier than predicted. I am very pleased. As for the content, Patrick McManus is always hilarious, and I enjoyed the book very much.

No more worry box!
I now have every book Patrick McMannus has written - and I always enjoy laughing and rereading his books. I spent a lot of my youth in the places he refers to and knew characters that were very similar to his - making his stories all the more enjoyable.

So funny!
As usual, McManus has you laughing out loud with his witty stories. You find yourself having your favorite characters, like "Crazy Eddie", "Grams", "Ranchid Crabtree" the old woodsman, just to name a few. My first story of McManus that I read was "The Skunk Ladder" and I was hock. "The Blood Sausage" was hilarious too and so many others. He his a genius in his field. I hope that he keeps on writting for a very long time.
