A Lens for All Time
Purchased this lens while taking a deep breath, because of the cost. I have been using it for a very short time, but so far is making taking photos fun again! I believe this is the best lens I have ever used. The colors in the images are pretty accurate with no Lightroom work. The micro details it captures are beyond anything I have seen. I have taken both landscape and portrait photos. In both cases, the bokeh is great - and the lens can consistently be used wide open. What I especially like is that it focuses precisely at the spot you target, but the fall off in both directions from that focus point is rather dramatic. I have taken these photos with my Leica M-240, and it seems they are made for each other. I have also taken photos in the evening in low light. I was concerned whether this lens would function well, at least as compared with the f1.4. My verdict is that it works well in low light. I set my ISO to 3200, and find all the photos useful without excessive grain. All-in, a superb lens, and at least for me, worth the investment. It would seem that the claim of Patek Philippe watches also applies to Leica glass - "you don't own Leica glass, you just maintain it for the next generation." worth every penny
This is heralded as the most optically perfect lens ever made nd has tested as such in the lab. But, the proof is in the real world across a broad spectrum of cameras. I have shot this lens on the M246, M240, Mono 240, M7, and M6TTL in color and b&w. On each, it has rendered unbelievably sharp and vividly crisp images from edge to edge at all F stops. Contrasts are wonderful and the images are presented in the purest sense of imaging: in an honest fashion. My 50mm Noctilux dazzles you with mystical bokeh and my 50 Summilux has a dramatic way with contrasted light. But the 50 Cron APO has a purity to it that resides in another world. This lens is in a class of its own. No aberrations, no fringing, no soft edges. Just perfect light and renderings in every imaginable circumstance.

Sharp at all Apertures
For scenics and portraits, this lens cannot be beat. The compact size, combined with stunning optical quality, makes for a perfect lens for street shooting, also. On the MM 246 the details it renders are amazing. If I venture out carrying only one lens, this is it!

Perfection
Perfection has a price and in this case it's a lot. However I plan to use this lens for the rest of my life and pass on to my successors. Yes it's that good. In fact it's way ahead of the camera body M240 in my case. I tested it on a Sony A7r and it could I suspect handle a future 50mp sensor with ease. It's definition is that good. Add in the corner to corner sharpness lack of any chromatic aberation perfect colours and all in all this ones a keeper. My old F1.4 is paltry in comparison. My only wish is that Leica do the same for all other sumicrons, especially the 35mm. Get one if you can find one.

the best lens i've ever owned
the best lens i've ever owned. Not only is it optically perfect (I am getting almost zero vignetting or color loss all the way open in the corners and 100% without a doubt at about f/4), its SO incredibly small and light. thats half the magic of leica lenses. sure they render the best, but they also fit in your pocket. mechanical masterpiece honestly. I know you want that Noctilux, but this is better.
