An adaptable, mildew resistant shrub, Hinnomaki Red stands about 3 to 5 feet high and nearly as wide, upright and is very, very heavy bearing. Expect the fruit in midsummer, long after the little white flowers of spring. The leaves are attractive too, especially when they turn bright shades of red in autumn. Hinnomaki Red is definitely ornamental enough to use in the sunny to lightly shaded border, along the driveway, or as a hedge in the backyard. Very adaptable from north to south, this fruiting shrub bears up to 10 pounds of delectable berries a season. That's not nearly enough, of course, to satisfy our Gooseberry cravings, but the more you plant, the heavier they all will bear!
