Excellent Beginning to Learning More About the Apocrypha!
This is an excellent beginning to learning the literary, theology, and history of the Apocrypha. I glad we chose this book for our Bible study.

Good explanation of these important books
I used this as the text for a Scripture course on the Deuterocanonical books. It contains a good explanation of each book, putting the content in the proper context. This greatly enhanced my understanding of each book, beyond the material found in the reading notes in my study Bible.I'm not exactly sure why the author use the word "Apocrypha" in the title instead of "Deuterocanonical". Although the book is not strictly written from the Catholic perspective, it certainly is appropriate to use this for Catholic courses (such as mine), even though there is no imprimatur. Maybe the publisher's doing...

Fascinating work, dry in places
I had to order this book for a class I was taking on the Deuterocanonical books of the Old Testament. There were parts of Harrington's book that had me absolutely engrossed and other parts that I found incredibly boring; however, that is likely the fault of the apocrypha itself, rather than Harrington. I understand that this is about the only book of its kind if one is trying to learn more about these lesser-known/studied texts. Having said that, I would say it was a worthwhile purchase.

Come on in, the water's fine!
The books of the Apocrypha are books of the Bible that are accepted as canonical by Catholics and Orthodox sects, but not included in the Bibles of Protestants and other denominations. They include Sirach, Baruch, parts of Daniel, Esther, Judith, and The Wisdom of Solomon. There are very few resources on this subject for the Catholic laity, and I found this book eminently readable.Father Harrington (Society of Jesus) has created a wonderful introduction to these books for students, formal or informal, alike.FIve stars.

Invitation to the Apocrypha
My Bible study group decided to look into the books of the Apocrypha. Since I didn't know anything about these additional writings, I was looking for a simply guide to lead me through the study. "Invitation to the Apocrypha" supplies background and offers step by step commentary. It is a perfect study guide for the beginner.
