A Must-Read for Understanding the Bible
Fr. Harrington methodically lays out the basis for understanding what the Bible is, from where - or rather from Whom - it comes, and the many valid and invalid ways of looking at it. He very capably takes on a very complex and contested subject and provides in elegant but understandable language the means to see the Bible in clearer light, to inerrantly defend the Catholic approach to the Scriptures, and to embark on further serious study of this most sacred of sacred writings.I was introduced to this book for a short introductory course on the Scriptures. It brought quick and deep insight, greatly accelerating my understanding of the Bible.

Required reading
It is well written even for me as a person with no theological studies except for self interest and having to take the course as an aspiring catechist. Only three stars because you will get only the point of view of the Markan priority thinking of how the Synoptic Gospels came about. I imagine there is not time to delve into all the others. I had to do my own work as a few other things didn't seem to sit well with me. It is worth going further into this line of biblical scholarship from viewpoints that do not hold to this method and why so as to see a bigger picture. I am only concerned with Catholic viewpoints. It makes a difference in understanding church and the method Christ chooses to make himself present.Just stay alert and do more digging than the course gives.I am unable to stay with the course at this time but I will plug an overall positive for the experience at UD.

Accessible short overview of Catholic approaches to the Bible
This book is exactly what the title promises. It is a short, readable, accessible introduction to the Catholic tradition's approach to reading the Bible. Perfect for beginners, it is wholly orthodox and remarkably clear, with a helpful dictionary of terms in the back. Written in popular style, it summarizes scholarly and theological views with remarkable precision. If you enjoy this book, Jesuit Father Harrington has a number of more detailed books, particularly in the historical-critical method. But this book is the perfect starting place for anyone who desires to read and know the Bible better, rather than dive into less practical scholarly disputes.

How do Catholics Read the Bible?
For people who don't have much background in scripture study, this is a good book, easy to read, understand and follow. It might even be an eye opener for some people who do read the Scriptures regularly. Harrington included enough detail to keep it interesting but not so much as to over whelm the novice.I was interested in other commentaries on the scriptures and Amazon gave me a good deal on the shipping so I bought this one too.

Not just for Catholics--Very Applicable Knowledge/References For Study
This is one of the best, most applicable small books on approaching serious, sound Biblical study. It has many, many references for further study and has much definition. Daniel J. Harrington is very readable, understandable, and has so much educational knowledge to share. I am/have been pursuing other works of his, Raymond E Brown's, Fitzmyer's, Scott Hahn's, etc., available at amazon.com. Though not Catholic per say, I have been learning from Catholic scholars/theologians--there's a world of truth and growth. I enjoy my Kindle Fire Tablet and LOGOS Bible Study Software.Blessings

A good introduction
I like Harrington's work, he writes crisply and clearly. This is a brief introduction to the topic, without being too superficial. A very extensive suggested reading list would lead the interested reader to deeper waters. The book also shows why Catholics need not avoid the Bible, and Harrington's style really invites even the reluctant or apprehensive reader to join in the regular and informed reading of scripture. The book may not turn you into a Biblical scholar, but it will hopefully assist some people to see the Bible through new eyes.

HOW DO CATHOLICS READ THE BIBLE
I purchased HOW DO CATHOLICS READ THE BIBLE from Amazon.com as a required text for an online course I'm taking. It contains a wealth of information for both new and cradle Catholics as to how we actually read and/or interpret what we read in the Bible. The author is a Jesuit Priest, also an expert in the Holy Scriptures having studied them most of his life, who teaches the subject as well. You don't have to be a student as I am; it's worth the read just for the knowledge contained therein.

An eye opener
This is a very small and short book but it is pack with lots of information. When I read the title I figured it was going to cover how laity catholics read the bible but it told the big story as to how theologians, the magisterium, priest and all catholics read the bible, very intersting.

Review
I only bought this book as it is required reading for a course I'm doing; but it is a real eye opener. It is a good book for anyone who wish to learn more about the Bible first, and second, the reasoning behind how important reading it yet though it takes time and you must be in that frame of mind.
