Book is in excellent condition.

Shipping was sketchy and the package was lost. Got a second one. The book alone is a gem. Studying Hawaiian culture and leaning mo’olelo through these passages has been so insightful. I’ve lived in Hawai’i my entire life, and I learned more about myths in this book than I have in school. Highly recommend!

This very thorough and deep exploration of the myths of Hawaii covers a lot of ground and presents dozens of myths and legends in easily accessible, down-to-earth language. Read about the shark god, the volcano goddess, and the poison gods of the trees, and come to understand how the native Hawaiians see (or maybe it's "used to see") their world. There are myths about the underworld and clever heroes who are able to go there and return again, and there are stories about the chiefs and kings and priests of the Hawaiian islands. These stories should put a smile on your face as they feed heart and mind and put you in touch with the natives. Highly recommended!

I am using this book as a reference book. I am enjoying the stories and the stated references to a common pacific mythos...The book has myths of Hawaii I never knew about... quite embarrassing as I am Keiki O Ka Aina and was really into the old myths.

A classic and authoritative work on Hawaiian myths. The book takes a very academic approach to an area which unfortunately has drifted into a causual, "fairytale" genre. Ms. Beckwith was a professional, writing on her home ground. If you are interested in the origins of Hawaiian mythology, this is a key text.

I had bought the book in hopes of gaining some stories about the myths and legends that were written in a light, entertaining way for a luau I was co-hostess for at one of the monthly meetings in my 55+ community. This book is very academic....it is well written, very scholarly, informative, historical. Th e author, is definitely the "PRO" in this area. This book would be great if you are looking for a book on the history of Hawaii from a cutural view point...if this is your reason for wanting a book on Hawaiian mythology, this has to be the most excellent choice. But I returned to searching the internet for something more entertaining and lighter and found a few good stores I could use.

I needed this text book for my Hawaiian Mythology class and it came in brand new!! Came in early than expected, too. 100% satisfied with this purchase!

世界中どこでも、この本抜きでフラやハワイの歴史を書いたものはいない。実際、系統的にハワイの神々とさまざまな解釈、それぞれの神々に因むメレなど、一通り概観できるので、辞典的にも使えて便利。元は1940年刊行と、エマーソン時代よりは研究も進んでいるようで、研究者の解釈の比較などもあり、アプローチは専門書的だが、読みやすい。一冊持っておくべき本だと思います。
