Asphaltum is a rich pigment that is close to burnt umber, but has a translucent nature, and keeps dark areas rich and full of depth as it dries, unlike burnt umber. Also this helps give it a nice glow when using it as a glaze, and won't look somewhat pasty like burnt umber. If you mix your darks or black using bunt umber and ultramarine blue, Aspaltum is a must!
