great book but missing pages!!
I highly recommend this book BUT just bought a copy of the 1997 edition (used) which is tightly bound and in excellent condition. All appears normal but upon reading the book I discovered that the book is missing pages 309 to 340!!!! The page numbers are simply missing as is quite a bit of subject matter. Pages have not been ripped out. Must be a printing error...The book is definitely worth reading. But I cannot give this edition 5 stars since part of the book is missing! I do not know if this is an isolated incident (I didn't dare buy another 1997 edition and have since bought a copy of the 1987 edition, which is complete) but do want to warn others and find out if other copies of the 1997 edition are missing pages. Thanks to anyone who wants to take a look at their copy and post a response!

When my children were young I had wished I had ...
When my children were young I had wished I had read the book before having children. It would have helped me prepare for parenthood in a positive, higher level way. By higher level, I mean it helps to lift you from the overwhelm side of parenthood. I only gave it 4 stars because I gave it to a family with a newly adopted baby and it don't think it mentions the special gifts and challenges of adoption. But otherwise, its a 5 star book.

HIGHLY Recommended!
I highly recommend this book to any parent. I am expecting my first child any day now and it has been such a comfort reading this book as I prepare for parenthood! My mother had the original version long ago before she had me. I must say I like this updated version better--even the author says she needed to make the changes/updates as she had become older/wiser. I believe the first version was writtin in the late 60's early 70's, so this version, written in the mid-late 90's is definitely an update. Regardless or time or era, this book is essential, in my humble opinion! If you consider yourself a spiritual person, this book is for you. If you don't, it could still be helpful.

Probably the best parenting book with a spiritual perspective
This book was suggested to me over 26 years ago when I began my family. I learned so many practical, helpful things and learned a great deal about parenting. Now my children's friends are getting married and starting their families. I would love to give a few of them a copy of this book. I gave out many through the years. Unfortunately it is out of print. I was happy to get this copy. Re reading it now, I see it is still the treasure I thought it was many years ago.

Seven-star book with one-star print quality
Polly Berrien Berends has written some of the most helpful books ever for parenting. I cannot recommend this book strongly enough; I read it during my first pregnancy and it was life-changing. You should read it too. In fact, if you read only ONE book about parenting, this should probably be the one.So, why the one-star rating?? I bought this new copy because I was away from my own library (which already contained the book) and knew that I wanted to quote from it for a presentation that I was working on; I also knew an extra copy would be nice to lend out, since I frequently recommend the book to others. Be aware the PRINTING QUALITY is pretty HORRIBLE. The letters of the text are so pixelated it looks as if somebody had a "bright scheme" to save 50% of ink costs. Find a used copy in person from a reputable used-bookstore, or search out a copy of the 2nd or 3rd edition online. The printing in here is a travesty. So sad.

Too bad this is out of print
Too bad this is out of print. I love this book. It was shared with me, and I have in turn bought it for others. A wonderful, practical, spiritual approach to thinking about parenting and children.

Best parenting book I ever read.
I bought my edition 38 years ago and am delighted it is still on the market. Includes the spiritual aspect of parenting. I give it as a gift to all expecting parent friends.

It was like having the most loving
This book saved my life as a parent! So many times ,in a moment of frustration and/or desperation, or even just a rare moment of quiet, I would open up Whole Child/Whole Parent at a random page and it had a message that I just needed to hear, right there and then. I'm sure my children benefited greatly from my repeated readings of this book. It was like having the most loving, understanding, accepting, and infinitely wise grandparent there with me, helping me 'see' the situation my child and I were in from the most helpful and loving/intelligent perspective. Thank you Polly Berrien Berends for writing this book. I would highly recommend this book to ANY and ALL parents. I was devastated when my copy was destroyed and I discovered that it was out of print. And so happy that I was able to find it through Amazon to give to my grandbaby's parents!
