TROPICA - Zucchini – Defender (Cucurbita pepo) - 10 SeedsWorth knowing: The Mediterranean vegetable zucchini (Cucurbita pepo) is a pumpkin variety. In Italian, the pumpkin is called „zucca“ with its diminutive being „zucchino“. In plural it is „zucchini“ or „zucchetti“, which is how the Swiss call this versatile vegetable. There are lengthy, oval, round, marbled, green or yellow fruits. Young fruits are very delicious and can be eaten whole, but can be consumed as uncooked vegetarian fruit also. Meanwhile more and more varieties are becoming known and sought-after. Fruits can be harvested over a long period of time until first frosts set in. Zucchini plants need little space, because of their bushy growth. Ideally, the vegetable is used for barbecue, being filled, roasted, or on pizza and in salads. A special treat: the beautiful, yellow-coloured flowers, which can be fried. Delicious and a real eye-catcher. Origin: The variety Defender F1 has a natural resistance to viral diseases and produces a high yield. The densely growing plant is compact and very robust. Fruits of the early mature plant are green to dark green coloured and able to grow up to 40 cm in length. Harvesting time stretches into autumn. Propagation: Ideal time for sowing is from January until mid-May. Leave the seeds to soak in water at room temperature overnight and sow them evenly spreaded afterwards. At temperatures of 20°C, germination should follow after 7-10 days. Plants can be singled out (pricked out) after 3 weeks . A sunny outdoor position is also possible from mid-May on (possibly also not until the end of May). Aubergines love a preferably warm location. Daily temperatures should range between 18°-30°C and nightly temperatures at 14°-18°C. The plants thrive best in soil rich of nutrients and being watered a lot.

Poor Germination
Only a few of the seeds germinated and at present only one is growing reasonably. Another has looked dormant for the last 3 weeks or so and is only just starting to lok like it might decide to put on a second set of leaves. Might be my lack of expertese, but a bit disappointing. I look forward to seeing how the growing plants will perform...

With time and care, would recommend
Was a bit sceptical at first of how many plants would actually be feasable from the seeds received. Of the 10 seeds received in the pack 7 seeds germinated with a final result of 6 plants growing, so I was thoroughly pleased by this. The plants gave a great first harvest, with medium to large courgettes growing, around 4-5 per plant. We thought the plants were coming to the end of the harvest, but more flowers and courgettes are growing, so it looks like we will be getting a second round of courgettes off the plants.Thoroughly pleased, would recommend to others, all they need is a wee bit of time and care and they have proved to be fantastic.

Excellent purchase
Excellent purchase, ten seeds, ten germinated plants. A bit more expensive than a garden centre, but worth it. Will buy again next year.
