A surprising amount of depth and subtly
Like many, I was introduced to Tanya the evil from the anime. I enjoy reading the light novels that things are based on, but in many cases they do not stray far. In the case of Tanya the Evil, the novel is so much better than the anime that it boggles the mind. Regardless of if you liked the anime, this book is worth a read. The first thing I should state is that Tanya the evil comes in three flavors, an anime, a manga, and the novel. All three are different, but some in more subtle ways that others. On the surface the anime is the most grounded in earth with fewer displays of outright magic, with the manga being the most magical and the novel someplace inbetween. The anime is also far more extreme in the expression of characters and actions, especially Tanya. The Manga more closely follows the anime here while the novel is very introspective and almost comes across as a completely different story. The plots maybe more or less the same, but they couldn't be much different otherwise. This might drag some readers down as the pace is quite slow and unlike the manga and the anime ,which are both action packed, the book doesn't actually feature all that much action at all. Instead you get a lot of internal story telling from the prospective of several characters and often a single scene will be played out from different points of view to fill in the things you might of missed. The story telling is top notch and I cannot express enough how much I enjoyed it.One of the things of the anime I found particularly uninteresting was the way in which it attempted to make Tanya act evil for the sake of evil, but this really isn't her character. In the novel Tanya acts logical in her own little way the entire time and she never does anything just to appear evil to a reader. In fact her actions are typically very deeply scrutinized to the point where you could ask is she really all that evil or is this just a matter of prospective? You can be the judge, the book doesn't pigeonhole you into an answer to that question like the manga and anime do.Another big difference is the character of god in the three. In both the anime and the manga god is a very overt character that is inescapable from the story, but there is subtly in the book that the other two medium do not even come close to achieving. This will once again come down to a matter of taste, as the internal narrative and external narrative types appeal to different audiences, but the book manages more of a balance where the other two mediums do not.Ultimately I cannot recommend this book enough, the depth it goes into and the research into making a realistic seeming world war is far beyond what I Would of ever expected from this book. The anime though fun, doesn't honestly even hold a candle to how good this is. While the pace is considerably slower, the book was still a page turner for me and makes me very much look forward to volume two which I already have on pre-order.

Scary Good
Many Light novel readers know the feeling of wanting more all too well, originally having watched the anime for The Saga of Tanya the Evil. Upon reaching the last episode, I wanted to find out more about the story. I quickly ahopped on Amazon and purchased all currently translated volumes along with a pre order on the way. This is one of few light novels that has both a great novel and anime. Each stand on their own merits by playing to the strengths of the medium in which they take place. The story is told mostly through the views of our main character, but we do get some insights into the thoughts of some side characters when deemed appropriate for the flow of the story. The novel is well-written and organized without the errors typically plaguing these english Light Novel Translations. I enjoyed the use of footnotes as well as reference maps in the back of the book used to help visualize and explain key concepts of the story such as military tactics and philosophy.I am thrilled to be able to delve directly back into the world of Tanya the Evil in Volume 2 upon submitting this review. :)

An entertaining read with plenty of character insight and a different take on world war 2
Painstalkingly explained world and thoughts.Bought this book because I saw the anime and thought it would be perfect to read the source material and once again this is actually true, but not without a caveat... which really depends on your taste. The book, is really well written (unlike my review) The story centers on Tanya or Mr. Salary man, a man who followed the rules for everythingalways going by the book and quite full of himself gets into trouble with a superior being known as "being X" after having a teological discussion with him about why man tends to forget about the existence of god. Tanya, formarly known as Mr. Salary man now must find her place in this alternate Earth like world and use her knowledge of history to her advantage, still it will prove to be challenging as being X, is constantly watching and throwing wrenches in her plans and try to make her a faithful believer.Ok with that out of the way, now I want to talk about the rest, when compared to the anime, the book constantly explains each point made or each idea very carefully, explaining all posibilities that can be taken to perform any plan any decision and at times not only from 1 character but from different characters point of view, this is actually great at points as you see how Tanya or other characters reach their conclucions to problems or situations and feel fully satisfied with their decisions, that said it often makes the book feel a bit filled with extra and you might feel like you want the story to progress a bit faster, really this my only gripe with this book, I did like all the explaining and all but more often than not I felt like I wanted it to go a bit faster, that said, if you like detailed explanations for everything then this is going to be perfect for you, the author tries not to leave any stone unturned when their characters are tackling a situation and in the case of Tanya even explaining why she takes her decisions, as you will see that, even though Tanya is considered a battle hardened patriot that every one should look up to, on the inside she often does things to get expected reactions from people in order to later take away something from it, be it a better (safer) position in the war or to get promotions, still she gets things done, and done they are as like I mentioned before she goes by the book and the military book often states that you must do as you are told by command so she does it whether she likes it or not and she expects the same from her subordinates, to the point that she can freak out or rather administer hard punishment for people who don't follow the rules.Having seen the anime also helped me identify the characters, as they have some long German names, I think people who go directly into the book, might have some trouble following or identifying the characters as they sometimes appear in a chapter and then you don't hear from them for a few chapters. In the end the story is quite interesting and more fulfilling than the anime as it gives you more insight to character actions, yes even for divine beings, there is actually a chapter dedicated to the divine beings and their problematics which I found very interesting, all in all, quite an enjoyable read except for the slow story progression which is the readon I docked it 1 star, I'd give it a 4.5 if I could, but alas I can't.Anyway I recommend this book and I hope you like my review.

You get caught, even if it is just at the end
You get caught, even if it is just at the end, the subject is interesting, not all the time it is appealing

Unique but solid
The premise behind the story is rather unique with an exaggerated character personality however the depth of thoughts from different viewpoints makes for a very interesting read. Excited to see what happens in the next book!

This was a great read. Couldn't put it down
I love the atmosphere, the disparity between what the main character is thinking and how their thoughts are interpreted by others and the intensity of the writing. 10/10 would read again
