The Sandman 5: A Game of You

A Master storyteller in top form
I read this entire book in one go. I could not wait to see how it would conclude.Neil Gaiman is an amazing talent and his Sandman series is the best series of graphic novels I have ever read.My favorite part of this story was the characters. Barbie, Wanda, Hazel, and Fox. To be honest Thessaly kind of scared me.Morpheus appears to conclude the story and bring about the ending. To be honest I hated that Wanda died but it was great to get that glimpse of Death in the end, she is my favorite character.Another amazing story from a master storyteller.

Excellent
This shows how masterful Gaiman is at weaving the threads of characters and arcs that had bubbled up in his tales prior. The secondary characters are what make Sandman as both a comic and a character. The sympathetic portrayal of Wanda, Foxglove being a character mentioned in the past that would definitely reappear in the future, the reconciliation at the end. All thematic and a little ahead of its time. Good work here.

Best so far in Sandman?
There has recently proliferated a question as to whether “A Game of You” has transphobic content. Written over 30 years ago, this volume was farsighted and prescient in its advocacy for LGBTQI+ communities. Gaiman responded to the recent suggestions of intolerance by saying “I guess you don’t understand how literature works,” meaning that a character may reveal an opinion but one takes the story as a whole. Even the inclusion of non-binary, gay, lesbian characters in the early 1980s was a step toward acceptance. The action in this volume left me frequently to wonder how in the world Gaiman/Sandman could resolve the seemingly impossible tangle before them. I look forward to completing the set over time, but this and volume II are my favorites!

Fantastic entry!
Not every volume of sandman is a banger(speaking as someone who is currently reading vol 6), but I can assure you this one is! Without spoiling anything, I love it when we get to revisit characters we met in earlier stories or who we’ve only heard mentioned before. The standout story in this novel has to be the one it’s named after, a game of you. It was so well written I actually went back and reread it. Cant recommend this book enough!

World inside my head
When I was a kid and had worlds inside mine, wish I had this to read/inspire. Would have made a world of difference.

Bought a supposed brand new copy. Showed up damaged and with a sauce stain on the back.

A Classic
Something I re-read every couple of years. The quality of the art can vary, but the storytelling is excellent.

Dazzling
This is my second favourite entry in The Sandman series (the first entry being the other). This is different from the other entries in the series in that Morpheus only appears in a minor role and the other Endless do not feature at all. The main story focuses on Barbie from The Doll’s House trapped in a vivid dreamworld with strange creatures, as a Princess and a pawn in a deadly game. I loved A Game of You and look forward to volume 6.

Brilliant
This is as good as I remember, sparking the same emotions as it did the first time I read it. A thought provoking story.

Slight damage
Arrived with packaging intact. Took out the box and had been torn and ripped near the spine on the bottom left. Normally have no issues with other sandman books that I’ve bought. I’m annoyed as this is meant to be a birthday gift
