Sebastião Salgado: Workers: An Archaeology of the Industrial Age

Stunning, haunting, and elegant
I was a photography student at UCSD when the traveling exhibition reached La Jolla, in 1996/1997. The book itself was released in 1993. I went to the Geisel library and checked out a copy. The photographs of the Serra Pelada mine hit me hard. The composition, subject matter, film type were all things that I studied. I couldn't afford the book as a student and got it 20 years later for my birthday. Revisiting the book and imagery has almost the same effect: the images are breathtaking and sensitive. The story told is of the death of the industrial age, or decline of it. 20 years on, some of these jobs are gone or close to extinct, like the Mattanza in Sicily. The title rings truer now than it did back then. I recommend if you're a fan of Salgado, 35mm photography, and black and white. I also recommend his new one, Genesis.

A hard story work was done
Salgado's project are long term and they have a good story providing with images along them. I liked the dedication. It's different from Mccurry's approach when he photographs images from different locations and sometimes different stories. Salgado in contrary is a "long term story teller" even if Mccurry have a book on India and Afghanistan. I like both of them, but for me Salgado's stories are more powerful. Still, both approach are legitimate.

Great Art with a purpose
The bikes we ride, the tuna we eat, the oil that runs our cars, the gold we wear, are all manufactured, fished, drilled, mined, by countless people in remote corners of the world, often under extremely difficult and dangerous conditions, and more often than not, for extremely low wages. In this beautiful book, the Brazilian economist turned photographer Sebastiao Salgado put his Art to the Service of Humanity, to give us a window to the rest of the World that remains hidden from our TV screens and from our consciousness. The pictures are magnificent, and as true Art should, their impeccable technnique is there to serve the greater purpose of conveying meaning and emotion.

Buy it for the pictures, suffer through the layout.
I can't really critique this book, because I don't have the language. The photographs are beyond amazing, the layout of the book is disappointing, with pictures running across the gutter. I understand that that allows larger reproductions, but many of the pictures are damaged by having their centers obscured.I'd have been happier with turning the book an its side to see slightly smaller but un-bent images.

Mr. Salgado's work has always amazed me. I own other books of his and kept meaning to buy this one. If you love incredible photography or if you are a fan of Mr. Salgado's this book is a must purchase. This is a huge addition to my collection of photo / art books.

Brilliant, mind numbing
This has to be one of the greatest collections of photos of all time. The introduction gives a powerful and almost poetic in its style overview of the images in this book. Sebastiao Salgado has captured the work environments that so many millions of workers have endured. The photos are a strong social documentary at the same time as being outstanding works of art with their lighting, composition and subjects. So many incredible moments are caught. An absolute must for anyone interested in photography or society.

Perfect photographs, but not quite.
Salgado is divine. He produces the most perfect images out there, in the documentary realm, and this book projects that well. The images are spectacular, no other word than that.Excellent printing of an amazing darkroom work.Still, one series stands out above all - the Brazilian gold mine workers. This is the only series where you can feel strong emotions and the judgmental eye of the photographer (and this is what I'm actually looking for in documentary photography. But it might be only me, though).I assume the reason for that is Salgado's origin, but nevertheless, I really wanted all the series in the book to be emotional as this one.

The best I own.... By far.
This book is by far the best photography book I own.My first thought when I opened it was that it makes my other books look poor in comparison. The images are printed large and full page.. And stunningly crisp and clear. Then you get to the subjects and content of the photos.. Wow!Within minutes of opening the book at my workplace (I'm a designer) , two people went online and bought it.Stunning content and amazing composition by an incredible photographer. It's impossible to be disappointed with this purchase.

Amazing photos - Damaged book from bad packaging
As always, splendid work by the greatest photographer of our time, worth every penny. On a side note, this is the last time I will buy expensive and fragile photobooks from Amazon. The packaging is awful and the books constantly arrive with all four corners smashed. This is just absurd for such an expensive book not to provide any kind of protection.

Grandios
TOP.
