In 1989, the Buffalo Bills were a talented team full of big personalities, including future Hall-of-Famers Jim Kelly, Bruce Smith, Thurman Thomas and Andre Reed. Dysfunction and infighting ran as deep as the talent in their locker room, but the team known as The Bickering Bills would soon transform themselves into an elite force. From 1990 through 1993, the Bills went on an unprecedented run of AFC Championship victories, appearing in a record four straight Super Bowls. But what's been remembered most is how those Super Bowl appearances played out, with the Bills losing all four. Along the way though, the Bills took part in some of the defining NFL moments of the era. Theirs is a heartbreaking tale, yet one that ultimately proves Jim Kelly and the Bills to be among the most perseverant group of players in NFL lore.

A Reassessment of a Perennial Bridesmaid
This episode of "30 for 30" looks back at the Buffalo Bills' run of four consecutive appearances (and losses) in the Super Bowl in the early-to-mid Nineties. There is commentary by coach Marv Levy, team stalwarts Jim Kelly and Thurman Thomas, and other personnel associated with the team. The team went to its first Super Bowl behind its solid defense and vaunted no-huddle offense, but lost when Scott Norwood missed a 47-yard field goal that would have won the game and the title. Super Bowl XXV was the closest the Bills would come to winning a title—they were defeated decisively in their next three Super Bowl trips. There were varying views of the team back then—some viewed them as chokers (they made mental mistakes in the weeks leading up to and in the first two Super Bowls, and the team was favored by a touchdown against the Giants in 1991 but still lost), but others noted that it was no small thing in an injury-prone sport like NFL football to just get to the Super Bowl four straight years (and the team did show the grit to overcome a 35-3 deficit in a playoff game on the road to one of their four Super Bowls). The Bills actually went 14-2 in the regular season against NFC teams during those four years, although overall the AFC was the much weaker conference in that era.The episode describes how loyal the Buffalo fan base is (they gave Scott Norwood a hero's reception when he returned to Buffalo after missing the first title-deciding kick), and most football fans hope that the Bills win a Super Bowl some year when their favorite team is not in contention. This episode of "30 for 30" would be enjoyed by anyone interested in the history of the NFL.

A must-see story, on a human or sport level
Great, great episode from ESPN Films. To Bills fans, it is our story. It is what we lived through, and what we live with, every day. To all sports fans, it is a compelling story that you wonder "how the heck did they hold it all together?" For 4 straight years they won the AFC Championship. Never before done, will never be repeated. They just faced four equally or superiorly strong teams that got the better of them. Yet the ride, to a man, was worth it, and they feel a great bond together having endured it.
