My Best Games of Chess

Great games
Fascinating detail on some of the best games ever. Great analyses of alternate lines of play. Informative and often amusing commentary. It's a joy to play through the games, but remember to turn your board around if Alekhine is black, because the diagrams are from his point of view.

Alekhine was the prototype for the modern GM.
The games are historical must reads with Alekhine’s personal comments. I have the old green Dover version in DN. I wanted a copy in AN. This version has a couple of things my copy from the 80s didn’t have.

The edition is solid and elegant
I live in Russia and there is a rather sad and strange fact: unlike of Alekhine's tournament's books this great one was translated to Russian very badly. So, I bought the English original, this edition. The paper, diagrams etc are nice; misprints: near minimum. It's a special bonus - the result of computer analysis. You ought to print, it helps us a lot. But I am still sure we need to have the footnotes (at least special numbers-references) in the book... This book is too complicated and great, so there are some editor's lacks in the computer analysis material. For example, in the last variation of the game #89 missed that 25... Bg7 has a simple refutation: 26. Qxe6+ Kf8 27. Qxf6+. Be wise and tolerant - such things are inevitable.Enjoy the artwork and the lessons of the genuine genius and the great man whose such difficult and dangerous life was a sacrifice for chess art and in particular for us - the serious and romantic amateurs.

A complete collection of Alekhine's games from his strongest playing years
The games of one Alexander Alekhine were instrumental in shaping young Bobby Fischer's approach to the game of chess. In this collection of games, Alekhine gives us his thoughts on all phases of the game, and the reasoning behind his moves. This version has been updated with algebraic notation, and links to computer analysis of the games are available for those players who wish to use that tool to get a more objective view of the strengths of various lines played by Alekhine. As throughout the history of chess, learning from the games of masters is often a necessity in order to improve to the highest levels. This book by Alekhine, updated with more modern theory and algebraic notation, is very useful to all students of the game who wish to learn from the prior greats.

Amazing book, almost perfect edition
I'm not going to say anything about the book itself as it is a well know masterpiece of chess literature. Therefore, my review is about this edition by Russell Enterprises. The paper quality and font and chess notation readability (algebraic, finally!) are great. The book comes with a lot of tournament tables, small size pictures of Alekhine and his opponents and it has great players and opening indexes (by opening name and even by ECO code!, awesome!). Not only that, Russell Enterprises went as far as including a downloadable computer analysis of the games and this by itself is an awesome bonus that clearly shows the kind of hard work the publisher put into this project. The result to be honest is impressive. There is just one minor complaint, for some strange reason somebody had the "brilliant suggestion" of putting the black pieces at the bottom in all the diagrams where Alekhine played Black.... well, what can I say, this is a practice long ago forgotten by chess publishers and for good reason, it simply feels weird having the black pieces at the bottom of a diagram, and especially having that mix of correct diagrams with messed up ones. At least this is something that does not make the book unreadable but it takes away a tiny bit of your reading pleasure for sure, which is a shame as this edition was so close to be the perfect edition, one of the best if not the best edition on Alekhine's best games collection ever.Anyways, this is as good as it can get, much, much better than reading any of the older descriptive notation editions, highly recommended!POST EDITIn regards to all the comments, first of all, thanks for reading my review! Second, if you were right and having the Black pieces at the bottom in chess books were so cool, then why 99.99% of all chess books EVER published (we're talking millions of books guys)have the White pieces at the bottom? Just think about it. I mean if a bigger percentage of books were the other way round, then you might have a point, but that is not the case and there must be a reason for that, the reason being it makes publisher's and most reader's life easier. As everybody has the right to have their personal preferences and everybody's preferences vary a lot, it is impossible to please all, so what smart people do is to try what is best for the majority (including publishers). I used the word weird but maybe I had to call this unusual, which is not necessarily bad as you put it, but I'm sure it is a little bit annoying for most readers, same as reflected by the number of positive and negative votes my review got, 18 against 3...

Alekhine!
