Step Back In Time: The Definitive Collection [Deluxe 2 CD]

Even though Kylie has only had a few hits in the U.S., I consider her to be the most consistent artist of the last 15 years. Everything she does has been interesting and of the highest quality. There are no bad tracks here and while it might not be a definitive collection - there are too many great things that are not on this set - it is a can't miss collection that serves as an excellent primer for newbies and a great flashback listen for long time fans.

If you're a Kyle fan this is the cd for you! So many songs and the booklet is just awesome

Great collection & packaging. I wish it was in chronological or reverse chronological order, if only because the production styles match. Kylie was a favorite dance/pop artist of one of my best friends, who died suddenly & unexpectedly on June 25th. This collection came out weeks later and it was so perfectly timed, helping me connect to my late friend and his love of Minogue, making the world feel brighter and lighter when I really needed it.

For being a Deluxe Version, very weak. Luckily the songs are all remastered and sound great, but the booklet leaves something to be desired. No lyrics, no chart history, no bio... just photos of the individual songs and writer/producer credits. You’re better off buying the regular version. Not totally disappointed since it’s pretty inexpensive, but there could have been a lot more to this.

A superb retrospective of 30 years in the life of Kylie! This deluxe version has a nice picture booklet, but sadly no liner notes, just song credits. Even still, this collection has nearly every hit Kylie released. Certainly the biggest ones. It’s hard to imagine that I bought my first Kylie 12” single 31 years ago. Blows my mind time has flown by. This is a collection that makes me smile and reflect.

I'm a big Kylie Minogue fan. I love the CD cover!!! Many of her big hits are here on this collection. I'm glad Timebomb is included. New disco hit "New York City" is a great dance single, it reminds me of goodtimes. If you are a big Kylie M. fan, you must have this!!!

Whether you are an old or new Kylie fan, this a great compilation to own. The booklet inside does leave a bit to be desired, but really it's all about the music.

Most of us know Kylie Minogue for "Can't Get You Out of My Head" and that's about it. Which is a bit unfortunate as she has a long history of excellent songs covering several decades. When I was an active DJ, I'd always have Kylie on hand because her songs (whether familiar or not to the audience) were always guaranteed to fill the dance floor. She may not have a string of Number 1 hits, but her albums have all been relatively good sellers and all have solid tracks.Kylie's voice is unmistakable, and while her voice may have changed across the span of her career, in most ways it became better and more capable as the years went by. This two CD collection is tucked into a hard-bound book with some information about the artist and the tracks, but it won't fit on a standard CD shelf so some will not like the folio. Personally, of late I've seen a number of such presentations (the latest from Mike + The Mechanics is a good example) so grouping them together with more vertical space along with several dozen other oversized CD cases is not an issue.The songs are not in chronological order and they do not sound remastered (comparing to the earlier individual CD and LP releases) although they may have been subtly adjusted; I just don't hear the difference. Which doesn't matter as this is a good collection of Kylie's songs, whether you know one or twenty. Solid.

This review is for the deluxe edition of the Step back in time - Pop Precision album.subtitled as "the definitive collection"41 tracks over two discs, mostly hit singles with an album track slash fan fave slash overseas single thrown in for good measure!Lets start with the a unique selling point. This version comes presented in a glossy, hardbacked A5 booklet, complete with 18 or so pages. What adorns those pages? To be honest, I was expecting something more. All we get is one single image for each of the tracks listed, each one depicting the said singles artwork for each track. ie, the UK sleeve for cant get you out of my head or the japanese cassette single for "lucky" etc - no write up about her definitive pop career which spans 32 years. More of a selective catalogue which just wastes paper.If you compere the duluxe version of Golden or the artwork to "ultimate kylie" those were something which were eye catching and special. The reason why we buy formats has been lost on this package. But don't let that detract from this hits collection.As a lifelong Kylie fan, I can still recall going into Woolworths all those years ago to buy my 7" vinyl copy of "I should be so lucky" A song which entered the UK singles chart at #90 in January 1988. Over the course of five weeks, that song climbed to number one, where it stayed for a further five weeks and became the first song to be simultaneous number one in Australia and Britain. And so launched the UK pop career of Miss Kylie Minogue.However, this was not Kylie's first foray into pop. In 1987, she recorded a cover version of the locomotion. It was number one in Australia in 1987 and was the biggest hit of the decade in Aus! A pop superstar was born!Kylie has released 14 studio albums as well as live albums . Yet this is only her third "official! greatest hits. Count them! Greatest hits (1992) & Ultimate Kylie in 2004 and now SBITPP in 2019.record companies have cashed in on Kylies success over the years with unofficial GH & best of packages ie "hits+" was issued after the success of "light years" and depicted a best of from her 1994 - 1998 era with deconstruction records, minus some singles! GH1992 was repackaged with a bonus remix disc in 2002 cashing in on the success of "fever"and a single disc "best of" was released in 2002 to cash in on k25. You'll note, Kylie doesnot allow an image of herself to appear on unofficial releases! Clever girl!So lets take a look at Pop precision. are you ready to step back in time!Disc one kicks off with the hits from 2000 - 2019.Album opener "can't get you out of my head" It HAD to be included! A classic dance pop song. la la la can't get you out of my head. Lyrical genius. The song was number one virtually everywhere in 2001. ok, number 7 in America!. The song became the third best selling song in the UK 2001, and the 7th best seller of the decade. Go Minogue, U legend!Gone is the meaning of songs and charts these days, but back in 2001, chart music was everything. Who else remembers the chart battle between Minogue and Victoria Beckham's first solo single (turned out to be a non event as VB charted at #6. In successive weeks, Kylie fended off challenges from Steps (chain reaction, which was later to be their last single as a 00's group! - who knew!) and a kept a big comeback from Michael Jackson at number 2!!! We can all be thankful that CGYOMY ended a run of DJ Otzi's Hey baby! (wow music and memories! Happy days!)Track 2 - Spinning aroundThe comeback song. Between 1992 - 2000, kylie departed the pop factory of PWL for more cooler dance label, deconstruction. Some of her finest work was made here over two albums, yet didn't have the chart success of her poppier days. A move to Parlophone records saw Kylie return to her pop roots and her first single with Parlaphone was Spinning around. No dount helped to N/o 1 by Kylie wearing those infamous gold hotpants in the video! This disco anthem has stood the test of time.Track 3 - Love at first sight.2001/2002 saw Kylie at the peak of her career. The album "fever was winning awards. This, the third single to be lifted from Fever is an absolute summer gem and radio fave! You can't help but sing along to this one. It was also the song that got Kylie nominated for her first Grammy.Track 4 - DancingBrings us right up to date with the lead single from her latest studio album, "golden" With the charts now dominated by streaming, the loss of formats making an impact on the singles charts have long gone. Yet, Kylie secured her 51st top 40 hit single with Dancing when it charted at #38. No mean feat in 2018 I have to admit, I love dancing, and the whole golden album.Track 5. - In your eyes.We return now to 2002. In your eyes was the follow up single to CGYOOMH with the single having to be delayed due to the huge success of forementioned song! Again, This era was flawless. Love it,track 6 - Slow.Another lead single, another number one! Slow was the lead single from the, in my opinion, lack luster "body language" album" Though i do love slow. There are also some great remixes and live versions of this song out there.Track 7 - All the loversKylie was back on form with her 2010 album Aphrodite. Lead single "all the lovers" should have been a number one, but its testiment that the song bopped around the top 10 before peaking at number 3 on the strength of the song.Track 8 - I believe in youWas the lead single from Kylies 2004 ultimate kylie and saw kylie team up with the scissor sisters to pen this pop gem. It was almost christmas number one! But no one was going to dethrown band aid 20! - not the 1st time kylie had been #2 behind a band aid in her career! In the days long before x factor too pop fact fans!Track 9 - In my arms.We now enter the ok-songs section of this album. IMA was the third single from X.This collaboration with Calvin Harris before he was famous is an ok song. I like the beat but the x era wasn't my fave kylie era.Track 10 - On a night like thisAgain, not really a fan of this song, but it was the second single off Light years and did get to #2 in the uk charts (#1 in Aus) and one of the songs Kylie performed at the 2000 Sydney olympic games, which was epic.Track 11 - Your disco needs youYES! This SHOULD have been a single in the UK but alas was not meant to be. Here we have the album version from Light years. but theres an epic remix on the single "on a night like this" and another awesome remix on "boombox the remix album"track 12 - Please stayIf there's one song that could have been left off this album, then please stay fits into that box. The fourth and final single off light years when fans were crying out for some of the more better tracks to be released as singles. This was still in the day of cd singles! (who rememebers "santa baby" being the b side, a song that would later become her 50th top 40 single! in 2018) *note none of the singles from Kylie christmas appear on SBITPP.we now enter the "could have been bigger" phase of the album!track 13 - 2 heartsit was now 2007. Kylie was back after her diagnosis and treatment for breast cancer. That in itself was a massive shock for us all. but by no, kylie had completed her rescheduled showgirl tour and was back with new material and a new sound. Electronic pop.Little known fact, 2 hearts is a cover! Kish Mauve recorded it on an ep two years previous. They also worked with K on her version!Such was the demand for this song that it was hacked and leaked early, resulting in a lower than expected chart entry of #4 in the uk. #1 in aus. I will be forever greatful for this song. So glad to have Kylie back.track 14 - breatheYes!!!! Breathe makes it's GH debut!!! such an under rated song. This song dates back to 1998, so belongs in the deconstruction era. but for some reason, on the deluxe version, it appears on disc 1. Meanwhile on the standard cd issue, it appears on disc 2!Breathe was the 3rd and final single from KM's impossible princess album. and has up until now been overlooked for inclusion on any of her previous greatest hits. I absolutely love this song. so laid back, so cool.Track 15 - red blooded womanThe second single from Body language and see's kylie try something aimed more at the US market. Still a good song, and a worthy top 5 singleTrack 16 - The one.Was it a single? wasn't it a single? This is where I started to become confused with Kylies career. This was the first single not to be released on a format. I think there's a story where the record company were going to release this as a single then changed their mind and didn't want to release any more singles from X. Yet Kylie and her then creative director, William Baker went ahead and made a cheep video for promotion. It's a fan fave from that era and harks back to her fever hay days! Its nice to see it included here even if it did end her run of 18 top ten singles from 2000 - 2008Track 17 - Come into my worldThe song that WON kylie a grammy!!! The forth and final song from fever. In par with the the other singles lifted from the album yet not as memorable. but I still like this song.Track 18 - WOWIm amazed that this is so low in the track listing! This is surely a kylie fan fave? The second single lifted from xInfectiousTrack 19 - Get out of my wayYet another song which I could quite happily cope with if it wasnt included on the album. The second single to be lifted from Aphrodite. There were so many good songs on that album yet they picked this as a single? It's catchy enough but so many other songs were overlooked.Track 20 - TimebombYES! One of the most under rated Kylie songs EVER!!!! Released as a stand along single in 2012 to mark K25, This is the first time timebomb appears on a kylie album. Don't let it be the last!!!This song has it all. Great beat. lyrics, iconic video. But by now, Kylie was "too old" for radio 1 to play her music. Anyone over 40 years of age gets blacklisted. Nevermind. I LOVE this song! WOOOP!Track 21 - Kids (with Robbie Williams)It had to be on here didn't it! Kylie was riding on a high in 2000. This was single number 3 off light years and again peaked at #2. Ironically behind U2's beautiful day! (kylie would duet with bono on kids during the showgirl homecoming tour!) There was talk that Kylie and Robbie had recorded another duet, but I wonder if we'll ever get to hear that?Track 22 - Stop me from fallingThe second single from "golden" and an absolute stomper. pop/latin/catchy/singalong Kylie still has got it. Again, should have been a bigger single, but the charts are rubbish these days!And that concluded disc 1. If you're looking for "new york city" it's not listed on this album! Only available on the standard issueOn to disc 2.This focuses more on her PWL & Deconstruction days. 1987 - 1998Track 1 - Step back in timeHey! It's the title of the album! A number 4 hit when it was released in 1990. A real good feel good 70s pop disco track. The second single to be lifted from kylies third album, "rhythm of love" The album was a bit of a mishmash. One, Kylie wanted a more mature sound. two kylie co-wrote some of the album tracks in America which sounded nothing like PWL were recording but more suited to Martika! Then there was this, pop gem.Go on, admit it, you Love this song. I do!!!Track 2 - Better the devil you knowThis caused quite a stir back in 1990! Yes really!Hark back to 1989. Kylie was releasing poppy songs. Happy smiley kylie. Cute dressed, tight perm. Then at Christmas, at the premier of her first film, she rocks up with none other than rock legend Michael Huchance on her arm!!! Kylies sporting short dresses and short wigs! Promoting her lead single from the film too, the slushy cover of tears on my pillow! The girl made headlines (GO KYLIE!!! YOU ROCK BABE!!!)Anyhow... fast forward to March for the release of BTDYK. The sound is fresh and dancey. The video is current and eye catching. More wigs. Sexy male dancers. Kylie showing more flesh. Yes, now the video is iconic. The song is epic. and has cemented itself as a Kylie classic.Track 3 - Hand on your heartKylies 3rd uk number one single. At the time, it held the record for the highest charting debut single, entering the chart at #2 before climbing to #1Yes this song is cheesy but I love it.Don;t know why, but I always wanted the spice girls to record a cover version of this song!track 4 - Wouldn't change a thing! Wow we're getting a real does of early kylie here. The 2nd single from the 2nd album. Nice to see it listed so highly in the track listing. I do really love this song It's crying out for a up to date remix though. Come on Steve Anderson, time to do your magic!Track 5 - shockedOkay so we're bouncing between albums 2 & 3 so far. Back to album 3. and the fourth and final single from ROL. No surprise that all the singles were penned by SAW. But this turned heads again with a major remix from the album version, and now also included a guest rap mid song! Shocked would become Kylie's 13th consecutive top 10 single in a row. A record at the time! She really was popular in the late 80s/early 90.Track 6 - Especially for you (with Jason Donovan)This song will follow Kylie around for the rest of her days. Well to be fair, it was Kylies first million seller! I remember this well. Kylie and Jason were still being shown in the soap opera, Neighbours. Neighbours was an Aussie import shown twice a day in on bbc1 at the time due to its popularity. The UK were always some 18 months behind!!!Anyway, Kylie and Jason's characters, Scott and Charlene were getting married on the show! (massive ratings hit by the way!) The wedding theme by Angry Anderson "suddenly" was storming the charts. Kylie already had 4 singles under her belt. Jason had released one single to date. Fans wanted a duet!! K&J who were secretly dating at the time, caved!!December 1988, they were stuck at #2 in the charts for weeks behind Cliff Richards, Mistletoe and wine! They'd have to wait until new year before they climbed to #1. The song, the video, the story is all iconic.Track 7 - I should be so luckyThe song that will haunt Kylie forever! Jan 1988, the song enters the chart at #90. five weeks later, it's climbed to #1 where it stays for 5 weeks! Becoming the first song to be simultaniously #1 in the UK & Australia!You all know this song by now. Cheesy lyrics, repetaive chorus. But one that has stood the test of time.track 8 - CelebrationWe were first given Kylie's cover of Celebration on her 1992 greatest hits. I don;t particularly like the song but it keeps cropping up. By 1992, the charts didn't favour pop, and this song harked back to the 70s disco era. While GH was #1, this scraped into the top 20.track 9 - The Loco-motion.Everybody's doin' it!not to be confused with the locomotion which was Kylies first aussie single, and has never appeared on a UK GH release. the loco-motion, note the dash! is the go to version! Loco-motion was a summer smash following Lucky and Got to be certain into the UK charts. yet stuck at #2 for weeks behind the equally tune-tastic "the only way is up" by Yazz. Gosh there was some really epic tunes released back in the day!Track 10 - Give me just a little more timeAnother cover version. But that seamed to be a thing in the late 80s early 90s. It was standard for pop stars to release 3 original songs and a cover version from an album promotion.1991/92 wasn't the best of times for kylie. AItken had left Stock & Waterman so Kylie was promoted to co-write 6 of the 10 songs on album 4 "lets get to it" Now I actually like the album. The cover-art itself is iconic. Okay, the lead single, 'word is out' was a bit naff and is not included in this GH package for the first time! neither is follow up single, the keith washington duet 'if you were with me now' Amazingly, 'finer feelings' doesn't make this album either, (Justice for finer feelings!!!) so we only have this one representing that era. Not a great reflection on that album as it was more dancey with some lovely ballads on it too.Track 11 - Never too late. The 3rd poppy release from album 2. The song and video are fun pop. but please, if you get a chance, listen to the abbey road sessions version of this song. it's just sublime.Track 12- got to be certainThe follow up to Lucky! A massive #2 hit And that's all i can think to say about that song.track 13 - Tears on my pillow.1989 and Kylie filmed her 1st feature film, "the delinquents" it was set in the 1950s, so she included this cover on her 2nd album, and it was also used in the film. The final release from "enjoy yourself" and became the first #1 single of 1990. and her last number 1 until spinning around, ten years later! some comeback!Track 14 - Je ne sais pour quoiThe fourth and final single from the debut album kylie. She was scoring top 2 hits all over the shop back in 1988.Track 15 - What kind of fool (heard all that before)We were first treated to "fool" before the release of GH1992. Its a truly awful song which tries to capture the 1988 sound. This song needs to be buried. Don't know why this song keeps getting churned out. I don;t she's she's ever sang a full version of the song on her tours.Track 16 - What do I have to doThats more like it! Classic Kylie. 1990 was the best! This was hard pop but dancey enough. Helped by one of the most iconic videos at the time. Hard to believe this stalled at #6. One of kylies better early songs.Track 17 - Confide in me.The first song from her time at deconstruction records. 1994. She'd taken a 2 year break after PWL before returning to music This was a far cry from the pop music. This was cool. this was classy. This was kept off number one by wet wet wet and that song from four weddings and a funeral Should have been #1Track 18 - put yourself in my place.The follow up to confide. Again, another cool slice of sophisticated pop. Such an under rated song.Track 19 - Where the wild roses grow (with nick cave)This is always going to be included. So many good tunes. From frothy pop of SAW to the sophisticated Confide in Me to the electronic dance Can’t Get You Outta My Head. Kylie is a legend people just don’t realise it! So underrated and still here 31 years later ... looking forward to Glastonbury at weekend I’m sure she’s gonna pick up some new fans!The only genre she hasn’t done is rock...maybe on next album?Update: are the bitter Madonna fans are out in force. Yeah Kylie is definitely more relevant in the U.K. in 2019 than Madonna. Shame Madame x has flopped eh? Amazing a Greatest Hits can hit NUMBER 1 and still be selling well. I mean Kylies first week sales are bigger than Madam zz sorry X after 3 weeks! Don’t get me wrong, Madonna Immaculate Collection just shows how good Madonna WAS... all hail the new Queen of pop, Madonna has been dethroned she’s now a spy with a silly eye patch!

So yet another hits collection from Kylie. OK great, if you've not got one of the many others (I think this is the 8th hits collection), but the problem with this product is the packaging. Two products - this one I bought, which is like a hard back book with some album, single and cassette cover pictures and the two disks for £14 or the normal CD case double disk set (SAME DISKS) for £10. So unless you feel the need to own very version of everything she has produced just get the normal packaged version for two thirds the price. (and it will fit on your shelves properly). Of course, it's all great Kylie music too.
