Healthy at Home: Get Well and Stay Well Without Prescriptions

These home remedies work
Over the years I have changed from a skeptic to a believer that some home remedies can be more effective than prescription drugs and do so with less harm. Of course some home remedies are sheer quackery. But Dr. Low Dog points us to evidence based remedies that work. For example, like most people over 70, it has been tough to get a good night's sleep. I tried her recommendation to take a low dosage tablet of melatonin just before bed time. It worked! I'm now able to sleep through the nignt soundly. This is certainly much better than taking dangerous drugs like Luna with their risky side effects. Also, I had recently picked up a head cold. Dr. Low Dog recommends using a neti pot to clear sinuses. I tried it and found I got much better relief than decongestents which can be counter productive. This is such a helpful book that I gave one to my daughter.

Healthy at Home is worth space on one's personal library shelf.
Dr. Andrew Weil calls Dr. Low Dog his family doctor and describes her as being the foremost authority in the country on the topic of natural medicine. It's true.Dr. Low Dog's book contains a wealth of wisdom, much of it gleaned from growing up with a knowledgeable Native American grandmother and teacher, who shared much of the ancient information. This is a great home-handbook and doorway to many, simple but natural ways to approach common ailments without having to be taking risky and often addictive, modern medicines. In fact, many of the suggested remedies, surprisingly, these days, are finding endorsements from medical entities. This is a great addition to any home library reference section and a great gift for family or friends.

Something for everyone who likes natural remedies
Really like this book. There is so much information, a book I will keep on the shelf for years to come and will, I am sure go, back to over and over again. I don't really use enough herbs to have a lot of them on hand and when needed in a pinch only some are available at the store, and of course cannot find them organic, so some recipes I will not be able to make unless planned out ahead of time. The author really is knowledgeable and enjoyed hearing about so many new ways to naturally treat things. My favorite one is the cough syrup made with Thyme,Honey and Lemon....worked so well this winter when the whole family caught the flu, pretty sure none of us will ever use store bought cough syrup again!

Disappointed in this book
Disappointed in this book. I was really prepared for a self help reference with recipes I could make. I was expecting more information on specific conditions. The ingredients necessary to make the medications are based primarily on the actual plant /leaf or root etc. Not obtainable for most . It is written in a conversational tone, and while most of the book is general and basic, you will probably find some new knowledge and/or understanding. She has done a great job of explaining the why of a remedy, and alternatives are given for many solutions. A large portion of the book is for pregnancy and childhood issues, not of interest to me. Even tho I reviewed it online, for some reason I still expected more of a reference book and less chat.

While I have no children at home (a major focus of this book) , and am not likely to prepare most of the natural elixirs Dr. Low Dog presents here, I found a wealth of information in the book that helps me maintain my health. For women (or men) with families, I think it is a gold mine that helps them avoid over use of medication, and helps them understand the human body (at all ages), and how numerous herbs and other natural sources can keep their family healthy. I am grateful for Dr. Low Dog's perspective and her willingness to share her extensive knowledge.

Be proactive in your Life
Love the books. Bought 3 of them. Full of good information and common sense. Good health starts at home. You are what you eat. There are times when you need real medical attention but there are times when it could be handled at home.
