Not very helpful unless you are a botanist, or zoologist
Dry and factually written

Not "true and exact" but interesting nonetheless
A good survey of the sugar trade on Barbados in the 17th century. Ligon gives a view not only of what was present on the island, but also what stood to be lost by the proliferation of sugar plantations. Ecology, society, and geography are all described in detail.Think of this book as a travellogue, or a marketing strategy to get wealthy English investors interested in Barbados in the 17th century.

1650 Period Description of Barbados
Although this book did not help my Genealogical studies it did offer some background for settlers in Barbados. It is very detailed in describing the island and its environs. A very detailed description of the development of the sugar processing and trade is covered. It did also give some early insight into the slave trade and why it arose.

Do you like History?
If you are interested in early Barbados and how the people lived and survived this is a readyou will enjoy. I did very much. I was disapointed that I didn't find much info on myfamily, the Howell family, but I loved reading about it's settlement. I'm glad I bought itthru Amazon and I will keep it in my library.

Not much has changed...
Beautiful prose with opening section describing Ligon's life. So much of what Ligon has recorded on the mid 1600's still rings true in Barbados today, except for the landscapes which were so completely altered in his time in Barbados. Sad that anyone with such skill ended up incarcerated by his associates' greed. This book is a reader in Barbadian schools, which is good as it does explain a lot of what goes on still today.

A much-needed modern edition of a neglected classic
Richard Ligon's history and natural history of Barbados was much prized in the 18th century, and it remains important for historians in many fields.

Nice Surprise
Did not really know what I got in this book until I got it. It is a first hand account of a slave in the early years in Barbados history. It is readable and if you love Barbados like I do you will enjoy this book.

Damaged book
Book was damaged on arrival. We desperately needed it and didn't have time to return. Very disappointed.

Great book by Ligon and modern explanation
The book is describing 17thcentury contempotary view on Barbados, the most successfull colony who first adopted cane growing and producing of sugar. With little notes that helps reader to put the things in their context it is a great book.
