Great book on early Texas.
This is a great book on the early settlers of Texas and shows the hardships they had to endure. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Most of it is the old pioneers and rangers giving their recollections of the early times. It was written in 1897 or so. Memories fade with the years so some of the reflections may be embellished some. He names the men who rode on the trails of Indian raiders. Men who were killed in these raids. It also recorded exploits of the early Texas rangers naming then. If I had anything to criticize this book about is it sometimes got bogged down with the recording of the names. This is a must for anyone that had family in Texas during this time and was doing genealogy. Who knows you might find an exploit of your gggreatgrandfather in it.

Texas Indian Fighters: Early Settlers and Indian Fighters of Southwest...is a must have!
Texas Indian Fighters: Early Settlers and Indian Fighters of Southwest...is a must have. It is one of several my Uncle Jack to many of us in the Sowell Line. Myself, he was brother to my great grandfather. All the Sowell boys of the era were Texas Rangers and Jack was no exception. He was an exception in one way tough, he was the only ranger known to have carried a Notebook and writing instruments everywhere he went, When other were playing cards or wittlin', shooting or cleaning their weapons Jack was writing true western accounts of the real events of Texas people and the Texas Ranger's struggle with desperado's, Comanche or Kiowas, Mexicans and Outlaws of all descriptions. Every child on our family gets one at least of Jacks books to hand down to the next generation.

Excellent Book for Texas Genealogists
This is a Kindle version of an old book written by a Texas Ranger, who lived among and knew the real life people he wrote about in the early days of Texas. It covers the hardships of the early settlers who lived in a truly wild environment. I always wanted to buy the book as it supported several stories of my ancestors in and around the San Antonio area. I was delighted to find the Kindle version because now I can actually search for the information I seek, rather than reading and physically bookmarking the entire volume.

Great Historical Insights
I heard about this book on the "Texas Bucket List" TV show. I have just started reading it, and I'm amazed at the insight into history. This insight comes from someone that was actually there and tells it as he saw it.

Good historical perspective of early life settler life among the ...
Good historical perspective of early life settler life among the Indians. Being a native Texan I was especially interested in the specific geographical locations that were describe. While I did not find any of my ancestors I did find a few surnames of friends. If you like early Texas history and the influence of immigration from the east you will find this book very entertaining.

A Must Read for Anyone Interested in Texas History
This book is a must read for anyone interested in the turbulent and dangerous history of the young Republic of Texas, as well as those who have ancestors, like myself, who played an important role in the decisive battles against Mexico, as well as with the long conflict between settlers and the Native American population. I read extensively, and must admit that each page of this valuable book is filled with vast amounts of historical, genealogical and other pertinent information. This book came recommended to me by a family member, and I was pleasantly surprised to read so many accounts of our (Winters) family in the book.
