Only buy if you love the smell of chemicals
Very strong chemical smell even before opening the box. I thought this would subside if I stuck them in the garage for a week. It's been months now and they still have a very strong odor. I would not recommend these for that reason alone. But there's more. They are covered in an oily, sandy substance that gets all over your hands and doesn't wash away very easily. If I had known these were going to smell so strongly even after all these months, I would have returned them right away.

Smells like a rats a$$ that won’t die
Most disgusting smell I’ve ever smelled smells like rotten eggs and it won’t go away even when I remove the item from my house wish I read the reviews I feel like I got ripped off because I can’t even return it for free I dumped them in the trash total waste of 20 bucks. It’s not worth it!

Can't get past the smell MONTHS later
These are fine for using, but I've had mine for months, and they still smell disgusting. I keep them in a closet down the hall with the door shut because they make my workout room nauseating. If you have no sense of smell, go for it. If your nose works at all, I'd recommend finding another choice.

Functional and love the metal holding the weight
The barbells had a smell from the rubber but it dissipated after they were out of the box for a day. I thought they were a good value,

I have only used them once, but they are sturdy, nice dumbbells. My only complaint is that they were greasy when I opened them. I'm sure it was some kind of necessary coating, but I had to wash them before using them. Others have complained about a smell. They smell like new rubber, similar to a "new car" smell, but only if you have them close to your face. I live in a small apartment and I have them out in my living room and I don't notice any smell.

These are well made and a pleasure to use. The grip is very high quality. The only issue is that they leave an oily residue on my floor. It is as if silicone or oil was used in the manufacture, and it continues to leach out of the rubber.
