Naked Pilot: The Human Factor in Aircraft Accidents

Despite its age a Very Important Book on pilot error
This book is older but is extremely important for those interested in "pilot error" and human factors. Beaty's central argument is that various issues of pilot error are actually system errors that occur due to incompetence, political and economic pressures. These are, of course, also human factors of the administrator and politician humans. Beaty carefully explains that blaming the pilot has many advantages for the system and for those in power. This is an older book, but you will immediately see parallels to todays events, like the 737 Max and others. It is great to see the issues from the perspective of a pioneer in the field who had many insights that we consider modern decades ago. It also helps to gain perspective on how slow and painful it is to change systems from within. At first it seemed like the examples in the book were dated, but reading about older accidents ends up being very educational. The author even includes a story of an overloaded, out of CG, non-airworthy airship that went down in bad weather in the days of airships. This type of accident still happens with regularity in GA and the story of an airship get-there-itis in order for a diplomat to impress a foreign princess can be a lesson to many GA pilots launching into conditions that their equipment cannot handle.

Hidden gem
Great book. Very glad I took the chance on it. Written in plain speak by a person who has walked the walk. Good psychological insight to the man behind the controls. Some of the reviews made it sound a bit high handed, but as an Englishman myself, I can tell the author is simply writing in his native hand. Some of it is intended to be cheeky. Not the usual red meat and disdain for instances of human error here, but someone clearly trying to understand and explain it.All good pilots never stop learning and this is a book you will reference back to time and again. I already plan on re-reading it. It is one of those books where you can't get everything on the first pass.

Thank You Mr.David Beaty
I had read many accidents from books, via internet for my search about human factors.Fortunately,i had bought "The Naked Pilot". This book let me see my own mistakes in front of my mental mirror, as a fixed and rotary wing pilot. Although, the front cover depicts an A300 cockpit, i really think that all pilots(including lighter than air, glider pilots) should read the book. You probably do not have as many systems as B-747-400 or Tristar, but you are still human and fallible.I like to echo the title of my review again: Thank You Mr.David Beaty for conducting your knowledge and experience to us.

Great Read
I bought this book from a street vendor in Nairobi, Kenya way back in 2007. I was working at an oil refinery as a mechanical engineer then. This book opened the door into the world of human factors in industrial engineering...I've never looked back!

excellent
I found the book one of the most interesting page turners ever and read it a second time right after the first. My only reservation is related with some of the comments concerning the shipping industry which are just about out of date so to speak and need to be slightly revised. I come from a seafaring career, followed by long safety and training-related shore positions with very respectable ship managing companies and am a holder of a JAR-FCL PPL(A) so I feel I can be allowed a little credit to a humble opinion. A word of warning: Read the book even if you might never want to fly again after that.

Findings also valid for a lot of other areas of life
Apart from being well-written and showing testimony of a lot of critical research, it is astonishing, how the author's findings can also be applied to the life o a non-pilot, non-crew member, non-aircraft technician. So taking a step back and transferring his thoughts elsewhere brings the additional rewarding reading experience.
