From the Library?
I bought this book for my Granddaughter as I remembered it from my childhood as a really fun book. It was used but in very good condition. When the book came it was stamped as a Library book and still had a library card in a card holder in the front of the book. I was so disappointed and told her I would get her a different book. I wouldn’t have bought it if I knew it was a library book

Good message, poor execution.
Meh. It has a lot of good onomatopoeia in it. I want to like this book, because it has a good message, but I can't get past the way the parents implicitly treat Gerald. The message is basically that everybody has their own niche, but in order to get there his parents more or less disown him, which is ridiculous. They accept him at the end, but it seems like it's only because he has money, or because he found the place where he fit. It ends up not being terribly good or terribly bad. The pictures aren't done in a Dr. Seuss style, but more like a cel-shaded 1950s cartoon.Instead of speaking words, a small boy starts making sound effects. People make fun of him. He runs away from home. It's implied that his parents don't want him anymore. As he's about to get on a train and disappear, a man who owns a radio station finds him and he becomes a foley artist. Clearly, that's not something kids can quite identify with nowadays, but the idea is still there.Message: Everybody can have a place that they fit. Something which seems like a flaw at first can be a strength when viewed from the right angle. For more children's book reviews, see my website at drttmk dot com.

Not Dr. Seuss's Best
This book is OK. My daughter seems to enjoy it. However, if you are just starting your Seuss collection, there are others like I Had Trouble in Getting to Solla Sollew: (Reissue) (Classic Seuss) , Oh, the Places You'll Go! , and Did I Ever Tell You How Lucky You Are? (Classic Seuss) that are far better than this one. Being a Dr. Seuss book, it is still worth reading, and it is a fun story. I would just opt to buy some of his better works first, but if you are completing your collection, don't leave this one out.

Get what they say “good” or “new”
The book is in good condition. I was stunned at 1st for it to have a barcode & other marks to show it use to be at a library.... but that is my fault. I thought I paid the hefty price for a NEW unused book. My order history shows I did not. So I got what I paid for & it is in good condition.

Very cute story
Was looking for some books to add to my daughter's bookshelf and I'd never read this one before, so it was a gamble. But it's really cute and we love to read it.

An Amazing Favorite
Our grandchildren -- now five and seven -- are the third generation of our family to treasure this Dr. Seuss classic. The copy of the original book that was passed from sister to my kids became too tattered and torn to use. So we had to find a new one. Now all of us can recite together, "This is the story of Gerald McCloy, and the strange thing that happened to that little boy......" Every kid should have the joy of reading this tale in rhyme, and the lesson of recognizing the talents that are given to each of us to develop.

Great Lesson
Bought this book after seeing it while participating in the Read Across America celebrating Dr. Suess birthday and mainly because my son's name is Gerald and thought it would be funny to read to his kids. Well he called me after receiving it and told how much he himself liked the book and the lesson he learned from it. He's 26 years old (never to old to learn).

FUN TO READ!
I bought this as I just fancied another Dr Seuzz book to read with my kids. The previous reviews rated this book highly and I agree; great price, lots of fun and giggles, and little voices going "boing boing boing" even after lights out...A great read for beginners too.

Content is good but binding and finish quality is utterly poor!
I ordered this "little godlen book" edition over regular paperback expecting better finish and binding. But quality of the book I recieved was appalling. The binding is no better than a job by local binder. Edges of hard cover were not covered, pages were jutting out of the hard cover. For a book that is printed in US of A, that is awfull. As for the content, it is a Dr. Seuss work. Go for the paperback edition instead and save some money rather than buying this ugly print.
