Great idea, horrible execution.
I love the idea. We have small kids, and can't watch most movies because of the language and inappropriate scenes. This seemed a great way to solve the problem. However, this just doesn't cut it. First, from a hardware perspective: it seems like the company chose the cheapest blu-ray player they could find on which to build their system. This thing is slow, buggy, and freezes up often. During the first movie I tested the unit with, it completely froze up, to the point I had to climb behind my entertainment center and pull the plug to reset it. Hardware quality seriously lacking. There are problems on the software side, too. The primary reason we bought this was to screen out foul language. The problem is, instead of muting out individual bad words (like on a movie edited for TV), there will be several seconds of silence when a bad word is uttered, so that you miss entire phrases or sentences, instead of just the offending words. Even worse, however, is the seemingly arbitrary cutting or skipping of scenes. For testing purposes, I had the unit set up so that the only filters active were "Vulgarity" set to low, and "blasphemy" set to low or medium. All other filters were set to "off". However, when watching a movie, it totally skipped several scenes, for no reason that I could figure out.In all, I'm really disappointed. My wife and I have been wanting to buy one of these for a long time... we've been waiting for the blu-ray version to come out, and then once it did, we've been waiting until we could afford it. We finally pulled the trigger on it, and were really let down. I commend the company for what they're trying to do, and I hope that they work out the kinks, because this product is desperately needed. As usual, Amazon is amazing to work with, and handled the return without issue.
