It's cellulose nitrate, but it does not look like 1960's tortoise shell
If you are hoping that this pickguard will have the brilliant reds, yellows, and oranges of original 1960's Fender tortoise shell material, then keep looking. Spitfire is as close as you are going to get. However, this pickguard is made from a true cellulose nitrate top layer, similar to the 1960's pickguards. These Fender pickguards tend to be on the brown side; there isn't a lot of red in them. If brown tortoise shell is what you want, then this is perfect! All the holes line up perfectly with my American Vintage '63 P-bass. It also works well on my American Special P-bass. While the material is sturdy, I was a bit disappointed that it didn't have a foil shield on the back.

Gorgeous! Worth the price for Original Fender part
Review for Gold Anodized Aluminum PickguardMakes my Fender Player Precision bass look classic. Easy to replace. The one thing to note is that this pickguard has 10 holes/screws while most of the Fender P basses have 13 holes/screws. There is one screw hole near the volume control that does not have wood under it. I just glued the screw in place for looks. If you have a sunburst bass with a maple neck, this is the look to go with!Review for Tortoise Shell PickguardJust perfect. Original Fender part. Makes my Fender P Bass look awesome. Only concern is there is no shielding tape on the back of the pickguard, so minus one star. I don't notice any hum or anything but the other pickguards I have tried had silver shielding tape on the back.

Great Pickgaurd but one small problem
Genuine Fender Pickguard. looks great, but one issue for myself. This pickguard doe not fit on the American Performer Precision model. This is a shame as it would look great on that bass.

Upgraded 60th Fender Anniversary Special Edition
60th Fender Anniversary P Bass. one of 1000, its original pick guard is off white with age, left original plastic on original pick guard until it began fraying, when i peeled it off it left a negative of the 60th anniversary diamond and the american flag, which was awesome. that said, this aged pearl pick guard looks amazing! I added 2 picks to the page, once they load, check them out. The pick guard went on with no issues what so ever, every hole lines up perfectly, it fit the pickups and the control knobs and output exactly. the only issue i had was that due to the new pick guard being 4 layers thick (white, black, white, pearl) rather than 3, i had to leave the top smooth washer off and thread the nuts directly onto the the pick guard. All said and done, like i said, it was easy to install, and it looks gorgeous!

fits really well, looks pretty good
It fit on my 2012 american standard p bass with no problem. same screw holes and everything. I would not recommend putting this on a squire or any p bass without the truss rod adjustment on the body end of the neck. it looks really good, the only complaint i have is that it looks slightly screen printed. Im not sure how exactly to describe it but it just looks a little digitized, but not really noticeable unless you were looking for it and looks just fine on stage.

A nice visual upgrade for a standard Fender P-bass
I knew this would look good, but I was surprised by how good. Installation is quite easy if you are familiar with doing minor repairs/mods to electric guitars. It took a slight bit of trimming in the neck pocket and pickup openings to get a perfect fit. This is to be expected. Once in place the whole guitar seemed to light up. A nice piece of eye candy! Here is a tip for you just in case you don't already know. There is a plastic film protector that needs to be removed. Do this after the pick guard is screwed down, but before replacing the knobs and strings.

This is a beautiful color and look for my sunburst bass
Fits my Fender American Special P-bass perfectly, and the truss rod cutout hole is big enough to allow adjustments without taking the pick guard off. The previous white one had a cutout hole that was too small to allow the tool in. This is a beautiful color and look for my sunburst bass, and looks so much nicer than that original white one. Genuine Fender may cost a little more, but it's worth it for quality and fit.

Will NOT fit an American Performer
Despite what I have been told, it will NOT fit an American Performer. The pickup and 13 screw holes are fine. But this PJ model has a 3rd knob where the jack normally goes. On the original pickguard for this model the hole is 1/2" closer to the others, and further away from the edge of the cavity. But the pot is much bigger than the jack. So unless you're willing to route out your new bass you're out of luck. You could also drill a hole in your new pickguard but then the old one will be visible

It is what it is and fits perfectly to a custom built 54 style P Bass. I have bought some alternatives before and they're slightly different size so happy that is spot but you'd expect that from a genuine Fender part.

Just a little smaller than the original
I bought this to put on my Highway 1 P base and it was just a little smaller than the original pick guard. On a normal bass, I don’t think it would’ve been a problem, but the highway one has a satin matte finish, and therefore a slight discoloration due to where it’s exposed to the light, more than on a glossy finish. With the smaller sized Pickguard, you could see the line from the previous one. That just won’t do. Also, the tortoiseshell was very lackluster and dark, with very little gold speckling. Seemed well made, and all the holes aligned perfectly, and around the neck pocket too. Just too bad about the outer sizing.

I received a used item....
... which besides being scratched and marked up in some spots was also very warped. But after notifying Amazon, they set up the return for me and very quickly, on the same day, sent another new one out to me which worked out perfect. Very nice Fender (mint green) pick guard.

Great Quality Original Part
This is a fantastic piece to replace your existing 13-hole pickguard. It should be noted it has the truss rod cutout on the body, though not all precision basses will have a truss rod accessed this way. Aesthetically it looks amazing to brighten up your Bass, the 3-ply W-B-W looks really nice.

Pricey but good.
Somewhat expensive, but that's the way it goes if you want a decent tortoise shell pattern. It's what I was looking for though and I'm happy with it.
