Not as good as the Lake chronicles but still fun to read.

Worst couple ever
I don't know which of the main characters was more exasperating. Each time they would seem to warm up to each other, one of them betrays or belittles or aggravates the other which leads to an overreaction, anger, frustration. My reaction was often "come on, not again." I forced myself to finish this book because I always finish books, but it was torture and as another review mentioned, the ending is so unsatisfying and abrupt it's almost as if Wiggs figured she had her word count or a deadline and that was it.

Excellent book for 1987 original publication
I collect authors so for those who have given this book a less than stellar review please take into consideration that the book was originally published in 1987. Why do I collect authors - because I like to see how they have grown as a writer and a person over the years. For 1978, and one of Susan Wigg's earlier efforts this was an excellent book. But it cannot compete with her newest books, especially the Lakeshore Chronicles. Why, because Susan has grown as a writer and a person, and the industry norms have changed a bit. At the time "Texas Wildflower" was written it was very new to have a young woman become something other than a simpering damsel in distress, today we expect gritty, tough heroines who make us believe we can do anything. For those of you who choose this book to become acquainted with Susan Wiggs you should really check out the Lakeside Chronicles. But if you want to read Susan Wiggs' early work by all means read this one and her other great books from the 80'. What is fun is to start with the earliest books she wrote then come forward until now and experience her growth as a writer and person as I have.

Frustrating & Disappointing story
I've read a number of Susan Wiggs' books and enjoyed them but this one was a tough read. The characters were not believable - supposedly bright people that did really stupid things. I almost didn't stick with it but I did and then the ending was just awful. Story lines left hanging and a totally non-believable and abrupt conclusion.
