I'm only about half way through, but it's pretty inspiring to hear about Bela Tarr's life and how he has always worked so closely with his partner, Hranitsky to the point of actually describing her on his films as "co-author" of the films. I think the credit he gives her is higher than the credit the rest of the world gives her, and it's nice to see a talented woman recognized for her work, even if on this small level. The analyses are interesting too. Most of them seem to deal with the evolution of the length of Tarr's shots in the chronology of his works, which might sound boring, but it's not... and there's more to it than that, speed, framing, etc. Tarr does really interesting stuff with them to bolster a concept or mood. Much more interesting analysis than anything you'd see written on a Hollywood film. But you know you're reading about an auteur, so I don't even need to bother saying that. It's really a pretty fascinating read so far. You should get it too and talk to me about it, because I'm having a hard time meeting anyone else who knows Bela Tarr's films at all, let alone find someone who's read the book about his career.

Quick review.
A good and very in-depth study on Tarr and his films. However, more useful if you have seen all of his films...

Great book for those who have seen all Béla Tarr movies.
This book is a well written and exhaustive analysis of Béla Tarr movies. I highly recommend it to those who have seen all the Hungarian master movies and find them profound, beautiful and intriguing.
