Sadly, too many professional athletes are too caught up in fame and the illusion of false happiness. Their abilities wear off and they are left with nothing but drugs, crime and unwanted children-all this according to the press. This book was just enlightening that there are many sports starts that are centered in life and know where their heart is. Too bad that some kind of spirituality isn't in all our lives.

I bought this as a gift for my husband. He really enjoyed reading about players faith on his favorite team.

He does a superb job balancing the personal stories of these athletes’ Christian faith while offering practical steps for the reader to take to grow in their own Christian faith, at the same time showing how when it comes down to it, these athletes are just like everyday people. The author not only provides the why and what of the biblical truths he shares, but he also draws up how these truths look in real life. Each chapter closes to cement this by giving readers “Questions for Reflection”.Not Your Typical Sports Book on FaithThe testimonies shared and truths laid out in The Biggest Win make clear this is not your typical sports book on the Christian faith. That is because the Philadelphia Eagles players mentioned in this book are not your typical Christian athletes. Far from using God for their own ends in hopes of taking home the Lombardi trophy, these believers are a group of Christians committed and accountable to each other in Christian community with the ultimate goal to glorify God while finding their identity in Christ and using sports as a vehicle to proclaim the Good News. In fact, a couple of different times in the book, the author goes from sharing these athletes' stories to sharing the hope of the gospel with the reader.This book also is not your typical sports book on faith because the sad reality is many sports books that deal with Christian faith do not delve into theological truths, at best, and take Scriptures out of context, at worst. The Biggest Win offers correctives for both. Chapter 5 addresses the false notion that practice makes perfect, pointing the reader to the perfect performance of Christ alone because, for the athlete, practice does not make perfect. As a result, the Christian athlete does not have to place themselves under the constant pressure of perfection but can rest in the perfect performance of Christ. Chapter 7 considers the most misinterpreted verse in sports that players fumble, Philippians 4:13. Highlighting this verse, Cooley takes the opportunity to equip the reader with a few pointers on rightly handling the word of truth. In both chapters 5 and 7, it is not only the author who proposes these correctives. I love football, but I'm not always a huge fan of books on football. I've read several book from football players and there's only been a few that I've closed the book feeling like they had pointed me towards Christ. Many felt like they were pointing to themselves. This book, though......The Biggest Win focuses on the faith of six Christian football players who are in the NFL....particularly, the 2017 Philadelphia Eagles Super Bowl team. I remember seeing video on social media of some of the testimonies from this team and I couldn't help but like them and celebrate with them in their win.Reading this book gave me a fresh insight into what these players have face in their lives. Carson Wentz and his love for God is so encouraging to see. He didn't have an easy road. I learned several facts about NFL players, in general, that I didn't know before.I hadn't really taken into account how hard it would have been to be in such a close knit team and then to be traded. Yet, that's the reality for several of these players. I did rejoice when they all had the opportunity to come together to win the super bowl!I absolutely loved this book and how so much of the book pointed to Christ. I mean, my eyes got big as I saw John Piper quotes and explanations of the gospel. Hallelujah! I loved how "spot on" this book was theologically. I was hurrying to read it simply so I could give it to my son for him to read.For anyone who has a sports-loving kid, this book is for them. I can even see parents reading it with their children and talking about the lessons that they could learn. The back of the book says you can use it in small group. Normally I'd say no, but because the gospel is all throughout this book and the players are constantly pointing people's attnetion away from themselves and onto God, it'd be a great resource!I'm so thankful for this resource and now I can talk about it with my son!_________________I received a complimentary copy of this book.
