Ludisia discolor, the Jewel Orchid, has beautiful foliage; it's one of the few orchids not primarily grown for its flowers. The leaves are usually very dark green appearing almost black with red stripes or veins, though they vary a fair amount. Its flowers are nice, too: it produces sprays of small white flowers. Great window houseplant. Ludisia grow on the rain forest floors, so they don’t like a lot of natural light. Too much sunlight can wash out their distinctive leaf colors. It is easily propagated by breaking off a piece of rhizome and rooting it in regular African violet soil. Flowers spikes occur Jan-March.
