Personal interest
I grew up near Washington's Crossing in Bucks County and watched an re in act ment of the event, but until now, I have never come across reading material that explained the circumstances of the times as well and as deeply as did Howard Fast.

Such an interesting book!
Loved reading the background of this iconic painting. There was so much history behind that journey, and it also tied in to the time frame of another novel I was reading at the time, which was interesting.

Many new facts
This book makes the history of this crossing much more alive. It makes of e wonder though about the quality of the early congresses of this country.

Good idea-- terrible writing
I don't understand why this is called a novel. It isn't-- it's a long, earnest, expository essay, virtually without dialogue. The late Howard Fast often had excellent ideas for novels, but his writing style.... OY! The book is just about unreadable. On the other hand, the movie made from the book-- for which Fast wrote the screenplay-- is excellent and enjoyable.Go figure.

The Crossing: An excellent report of the event.
The author did a well documented report on the events leading up to the crossing of Delaware River and that battle at Trenton, New Jersey during the American Revolutionary War. The physical condition and morale of the soldiers in General Washington's army at that time gives realism to the situation.

Interesting and revealing look at the Revolutionary War.
Interesting insight into George Washington and his life and times during the Revolutionary War.The insights into other high profile men of the time provide a "down to earth" view of the humanity and courage of these men.

An amazing and heart-racing story
Mr. Fast has a unique writing style. It took a page or two for me to get swept up, but I was soon sitting in ice water with the rest of the soldiers, freezing, hungry and hoping I'd be alive when the sun came up.
