By holding the upper section of the reel in place this will allow the handle threads to catch

Spinfisher VI is a top-notch reel and the good rod is worth the combo packaging
This is an excellent reel and a quality med-heavy rod to match; the combo price is often the same as the reel alone, though the packaging is poor. Assuming you don't need a box or manual, this was a good deal.
