Original Album Series (5CD)(Alliance Exclusive)

Ricki is a one of a kind chanteuse with an unforgettable style and range who can do anything; rock, jazz, folk, you name it. Very enjoyable collection of albums, fairly early stuff but well-polished and great backup too.

Item arrived quickly and as advertised.

I purchased this box set despite already owning 4/5 of these cds. I brought it mainly to acquire "Girl at her Volcano" which has only ever been issued on cd as a Japanese import and is currently pretty pricey on its own. For the price (i.e. using an amazon 2ndary vendor for $12 and s/h), as well as for the convenience of having 5 of RLJ's best works in one convenient package -- well I ain't mad. The complaint about the lack of an updated remastering is a non issue for me. I actually think the current mastering on offer is excellent with the possible exception of "Girl" which could use a sonic update and some bonus cuts. If the powers that be ever decided to do so, I would definitely shell out coins for an expanded special edition of Girl. . Anyway, the box set provided an excuse for me re-acquaint myself with Rickie Lee at the start of her career, and I am in love all over again!

I had only remembered one of this lady's songs ("Chucke's In Love") from a lifetime ago but this original series includes incredible variety of genres, superb quality of voice, Rickie's unique style and her true shining as a poet...it just surpassed all my expectations. It has been the best product I have bought on Amazon.com to date. If you love jazz, blues, a bit of country, pop.......you will not be disappointed, even if you have never heard of this most amazing artist. I recently saw her at a concert and although "years will go by", she still did not disappoint her audience. She has a gift to entertain on these five wonderful CD's; to surprise you at each and every song, play guitar and piano beautifully, and evoke many different emotions. I originally bought this for my husband (a musician), as he played a vinyl of her's from the past, "Pirates." I was so taken by the voice, her style, and her one of a kind talent, that I bought this entire album series for him. I listen to it more than he does but we both love it-"Pirates" being our favorite. She also takes on styles from different artists, all of whom we love and her strong writing of poetry, ballads......just makes you listen intently. What a talented lady she was and still is, so many years later.

Talk about dynamic range in popular music, these CDs are terrific in this regard. Yes they are old masters, great. Indeed I do think there is too much DR in some cases and some tracks need more gain - something you can do yourself after ripping them with EAC. Here we have proper musical music. If only more audio engineers and perhaps more artists took some time to look at their own recordings and see what a mess most of them are nowadays. I'm sure Adele has a great voice and has some outstanding songs but I can't listen to her, she is not Green Day, but she is recorded like she is. Buy this, if it is too quiet, buy a bigger volume knob.

Nobody does American pop classics like RLJ--her Girl on a Volcano mini album with her rendering of My Funny Valentine is marvelous. Her version of that song was used beautifully as the end song in the film score of The Fabulous Baker Boys. Her sad sweet gritty improve jazzy style is perfect for the song and the film. Glad to find that album and the others on CD to add to my RLJ collection.

Good mix, however, not quite up to the Rickie Lee Jones album, so i'm glad that was included in the bunch.

Awesome compilation

Have the debut album on vinyl and looked for a CD version. Found some 'remastered' versions (in my experience not always successful) and came across this set which was extremely good value for 5 albums. Still all sounds as good as it did (albeit on CD) and Rickie Lee Jones distinctive voice is particularly good on the live album
