A Cruise to Murder (A Rachel Prince Mystery)

Great start to series
I was surprised with this book. There were a number of characters introduced in the beginning. The book switched between different characters perspective. I had started in audio and grabbed the kindle version to skim back through the first few chapters. It was easier at the beginning to track who was who and each character's background with the ebook. So, for that reason I felt the story paced slower in the beginning. However, the characters were great, the mystery develops throughout and the investigation was interesting. This was a clean Book that held my interest and kept me guessing. I am hooked and want to move onto the next book!

A delightful fast-read cozy
A really captivating first novel from Dawn Brookes set on a ship cruising the Mediterranean. Our central character is rookie police officer Rachel Prince, who is recovering from just being unceremoniously dumped by her two-timing fiance. She accepts an invitation from her best friend and ship's nurse Sarah. Shortly after boarding, Rachel befriends the elderly widow Lady Marjorie, who seems to be a target for several suspicious accidents. After a terrible death, Rachel becomes convinced that there is a murderer afoot on the cruise and Lady Marjorie is the target, and woe befall anyone who gets in the way.On the downside, Brookes does not really give us an abundance of suspects to pick from and the revelation of the assassin and motives are introduced fairly late in the proceedings. She may want to give us more people to guess whodunnit in the future and introduce them sooner in the plot. I also wish she had developed the relationship between Rachel and the sexy mystery man on the cruise a bit more. This was a really light, fun read and I enjoyed the main characters of Rachel, Sarah and Marjorie. The plot is fast-moving and I am looking forward to reading the future entries in the series.

A "clean" mystery with plenty of suspense, thrills, and violence (without the gore)
I’ve never been on a cruise, but reading one of the Rachel Prince mysteries by Dawn Brookes is almost as good as actually being there—with the added fun of trying to find a killer. The bio of the author says she’s a cruise veteran, and I loved the details about cruises and cruise ships that appeared in this book. I had read the second book in the series a while back, and if I’m remembering correctly, this one has a bit more detail about the ship and the cruise experience. The author did that right—put more in the first book and only touch on it in subsequent ones. But back to the book itself—this one begins with Rachel Prince, a newly minted policewoman, heading off for a cruise on a ship where her best friend works as a nurse. Rachel has recently been dumped by her fiancé and needs to get away to get her head on straight. She meets an elderly and wealthy widow from the stateroom next to hers and soon begins to suspect someone is out to do harm to the woman. The author has created a very likable character in Rachel and in the supporting characters, including her friend, Sarah, and the people she works with in the medical bay. This is a “clean” mystery, but there is plenty of suspense, thrills, and violence (without the gore). I’m looking forward to reading the others in the series and hope the author will keep them coming for quite some time.

Very cozy and delightful read !
I like anything written on a cruise trip and this book didn't miss the mark. Totally enjoyed the characters and the mystery aboard the ship was absolutely believable and kept you guessing until the very end.Special note: After reading all three of Dawn Brookes' DC Prince novels on the high seas, I can most highly recommend you avid cozy mystery readers do the same! All are well written, the characters feel like you personally know them, and the mystery "who done it and why" will keep you guessing until the end. So looking forward to reading the next novel by Ms Brookes!

Pleasant, light reading
Good for the genre of cozy mysteries. Brookes delivers the story successfully with likeable characters (I especially liked Marjorie) . There is the usual over-the-top depiction of the female as EXTRAORDINARILY beautiful, so beautiful that the reader must be reminded repeatedly (sigh) and the male as being STUNNINGLY handsome, also with numerous reminders (enough already!) that I find superficial and annoying.I liked this book enough, however, to plan to read the next in the series.

Another Fun Cozy Mystery for Travelers!
As is the start of many books (or maybe it’s somehow the books I choose?!?), this book starts with Rachel Prince, a police constable (it’s definitely a British author), discovering that her fiance has fallen in love with someone else and wants to break up. Newly single, she decides to heal her wounds by joining her best friend Julia who works as a nurse on a cruise ship for a two week cruise of the Mediterranean. She makes friends with her older neighbor on the ship, Lady Marjorie, and meets an intriguing Italian man at her shared dinner table… The cruise gets even more exciting when a woman is mysteriously killed while in one of the ports. I really enjoyed this book for the insight into cruise ship life, the really likable characters, and some unexpected plot twists, but the ending was a little disappointing (it seemingly strays from what I expect from a cozy mystery) and the pacing is sometimes off. I’ll read more of Rachel’s adventures, though!

Excellent if you like cruising
I enjoy cruising and hoped this book would would be a good book to make me feel like I was on a cruise. It did! There were enough appropriate cruising details and cruise ship personalities to give this a 5 star rating. I would prefer more food descriptions, since Rachel ate too healthily most of the timeShe was a likeable character, and the plot moved along quickly with enough twists and Mediterranean shore excursions.

An enjoyable read
A delightful piece of fiction, an enjoyable and easy read with short chapters that make picking up and putting down easy! Interesting characters are introduced throughout the novel and insight into certain aspects of cruise ship life is most interesting. A cosy crime novel that is enjoyable, interesting and entertaining. I am looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

Thoroughly enjoyable cozy mystery
I really enjoyed this cozy mystery about a police woman taking a well deserved holiday on the cruise ship that her best friend works on as a nurse. Very descriptive, easy to follow and memorable characters. A few twists and turns along the way to keep you guessing, makes this a real page Turner. Highly recommended reading for lovers of cosy mysteries. Looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

Neat Little Whodunnit
I liked this neat little whodunnit because it kept had me guessing and I liked the setting, which was a cruise ship. All the pieces of the puzzle were there, all the characters were well introduced and we got to see as many as necessary takes on the situation. At times, I would have preferred a faster pacing, but overall, I enjoyed it. Enjoyable for anyone who likes a cozy mystery with an international flair for a summer holiday read.
