A man who had such a horrofic upbringing it scared him deeply until he met a doctor that helped him
Antwone Fisher was based upon a true story and was the directorial debut for Denzel Washington. Denzel also played Navy psychologist Lieutenant Commander Jerome Davenport along with Derek Luke as Fisher. The movie is about Fisher confronting his horrific upbringing and the family that abandoned him.Fisher was in the Navy and kept on getting in trouble. He was about to be kicked out when he was assigned to see Davenport for counseling and assessment. At first, Fisher was defiant and wouldnβt say anything in his sessions. Eventually he opened up about why he always got in trouble. He grew up an orphan. He was taken in by a foster family who beat him and psychologically tortured him. He used to be tied up and left in the basement in the dark for instance. His foster sister tried to molest him. That made him so mad when he became an adult he was ready to explode at any moment.Commander Davenport is able to get Antwone over his initial anger but tells him that only by confronting his family can he really get over things. Thatβs where the movie goes in the second half. The movie is extremely powerful and moving. The upbringing Fisher went through was a horror no kid should have endured. Denzel does a good job as his mentor, and the end is very touching.

Wish we could all have a Dr. Jerome Davenport
I believe, that even though we try to focus on the good in our lives, most of us have had some horrific thing that took place during our childhood that created problems for us later. None of us truly know why we react to certain smells, sounds, fibers, tastes, lights etc. Things that set off feelings of angst that we can't seem to shake and don't know why. Kindness and love towards others needs to abound, but sometimes we attack or are attacked by the very people trying to reach us. This is a movie about a give/get/give/get scenario that takes you deeper into the reason behind what APPEARS to be Antwone's nature, and possibly our own. We do not have to remain behind the walls we create to protect ourselves, but we may need help breaking those walls down. What a great story.

Excellent Excellent Excellent!!!!
I can't believe I neglected to see this movie when it was released in 2002. Anyway, I just watched it, and I am floored by the story and performances. The chemistry between Denzel and Derek is amazing. I wanted to see more and more of them together. What a warm story of mentorship and kindness. It is shameful that this movie didn't receive major awards. Just shameful.

Sincere, a bit emotionally inconsistent

Washington stars in the film as the psychiatrist Jerome Davenport, alongside Hollywood newcomer Derek Luke, who plays the title role (and personally knew the real Antwone Fisher), and former model Joy Bryant, as Fisher's girlfriend. With a screenplay written by the real life Antwone Fisher, it shouldn't be too much of a surprise that π¨ππππππ ππππππ is mostly accurate in terms of the trauma documented and portrayed for unsuspecting audience members. Born on August 3rd, 1959 in a woman's prison in Ohio, π¨ππππππ ππππππ is quintessentially honest about its titular characters experience with growing up in the foster care system - which was largely abusive and exploitive - and goes to great lengths to destigmatize conversations and interactions related to these circumstances for those with an empathetic or deeply personal connection to the subject matter. Without spoiling or insinuating that part of π¨ππππππ ππππππ remains preoccupied with its overall gravitas as it pertains to tragedy all I will say is that the side-plot involving βJessieβ (Fisherβs closest friend and confidant growing up) is not confirmed as accurate or easily corroborated by any sources I've managed to find thus far, and this is suspicious given how easily the rest of the film is established as being based in factTo this filmβs credit - it has an unbelievably large amount of ground to cover considering it includes events happening over the span of approximately 40 years (although, it is written and to made to look like it occurs over the course of 20). Fisher joined the United States Navy in 1978 and spent 11 years in the service; during this time he received regular counseling services from Lieutenant Commander Williams, who would press and encourage Fisher to pursue a relationship with his biological family to answer pertinent questions about his origins as the point of resolve. Fisher did not succeed in making contact with an aunt (and secondarily, his own mother) until πππππ his discharge from the Navy with his autobiography entitled ππππ πππ ππππ being published in 2001. Shortly after this publication the rights to his story were sold to 20th Century Fox with Denzel Washington stepping in for his directorial debut and acting as a lead character so as to ensure this project would be financed adequately and well-received by otherwise disinterested viewers or investors. The subsequent need to emphasize Fisher's relationship with his psychiatrist as an area of contention among significant points of change and development in his life explains some inconsistency in terms of emotional and behavioral growth shown in π¨ππππππ ππππππ (In my opinion, it happens much too quickly, but I digress), but at a little under two hours of runtime π¨ππππππ ππππππ is to the point and remains compelling throughoutAn empowering story without a doubt - π¨ππππππ ππππππ is a sandwich that is easily enjoyed, but at points might be difficult to chew. With its potential for criticism overshadowed by silver linings what could be a cloud that obscures an understanding of Fisher's background and upbringing is actually a window into the source of his resilience with a sincerity provided by its cast members that pulls through whole-heartedly.

Never Judge a Book by the Cover
My 3rd time watching this movie, but first time watching it as an adult. I must say, this movie had so many layers as it relate to the psychological aspect of behavior in this young black man. He struggle to find closure from a horrific past required patience and understanding. At present, there are many Antwone Fishers that struggle with overcoming their past. Often times these young men don't make it out or fall victim to their environment. Denzel was not just a therapist, he was a friend and even a father figure to this young man, but failed to realize it until the end of the therapy sessions.I often wonder why the psychological aspect of young black men is never considered in the Justice System. They are often criminalized or their actions is looked at as bad behavior, but no one seems to care where these actions stem from. Black men are more likely to grow up without a father but this is never considered as a derivative of their actions. Young white boys are often given this privilege and a lesser sentence when they come from an unstable family structure, and given a second chance. If you are a teacher or therapist, this movie validates how effective therapy can be for young black men if provided with care.

after another outburst and aggression against a superior ranked navy man
The violent and rebel twenty-five years old sailor Antwone Fisher (Derek Luke) is sent to three sessions for evaluation with the navy psychiatrist Dr. Jerome Davenport (Denzel Washington), after another outburst and aggression against a superior ranked navy man. Reluctant in the beginning of the treatment, he gets confidence in Dr. Davenport and discloses his childhood, revealing painful traumas generated in his foster house. Meanwhile, he meets Cheryl Smolley (Joy Briant), and they fall in love for each other. Resolving his personal problems, Antwone becomes a new man. This true familial drama is a touching and positive story of a man who finds a friend and is sent back to a regular life. The direction of Denzel Washington is excellent, making sensitive, attractive and with good taste, a story about child abuse.

Inspirational ...
One of my top ten films of all time. When I finished watching this movie, I just couldn't understandwhy it didn't get the recognition it thoroughly deserves. Denzel Washington made his directorial debut(is there anything that this excellent actor can't achieve?); and you would have thought thatDerek Luke had acted all of his life - and this was his first big screen role. This unusual tale, and acted in unusual surroundings, sets us on an emotional roller coaster from beginning to end.On all fronts an accomplished film ... GO GET IT!

Moving and sweet!
Directed by as well as featuring Denzel Washington, but it's Derek Luke as Antwone who steals the acting honours. A moving story about achieving against the odds, human values and struggles. Not to give any spoilers, just go ahead and have a look. Enjoyed it very much.
