Harold's ABC Board Book

Another great Harold book
I was absolutely surprised and delighted when I read this book for the first time with my toddler. We loved the original book, Harold and the Purple Crayon, and I was excited to get the other books by Crockett Johnson when I saw that Harold had other adventures. This book is so incredibly clever...he does such a great job weaving a tale while cleverly incorporating the letter into a picture of something starting with that letter. There are a couple of spots where he uses unusually "grown-up" words (i.e. "edifice" and "etcetera" under E), but that's fine. Help my toddler develop a more sophisticated vocabulary. ;-) LOVE this book...I would recommend for 2-year olds and up.

Love Harold!
I worried that my little one wouldnt love these books like I did. They were absolute magic for me, but I'm Generation X and the only 'flashy' kid product we got was Sesame Street (still a fave) and even that's flashier now. The whole world is animation and soundtracks and though its fun and has its place... I worried the wonder of that purple crayon wouldnt hold up. I was wrong.Harold (the original Crockett J versions) is a household favorite. My husband who grew up without them (and is the purveyor of much of the flashy commercial stuff in the house) LOVES them too.Just... be ware the newer, non-Crockett Harolds. I found those disjointed and entirely lacking in magic.

Not as good as the original Harold and the Purple Crayon.
Good but not nearly as good as the original Harold and the Purple Crayon: Harold and the Purple Crayon 50th Anniversary Edition (Purple Crayon Books). I'd really give it 3.5 stars. This one is kind of silly and tedious to read. Some of the word choices for the letters are odd especially considering that the book is meant for young children. My son asks for the original Harold much more and that book is brilliant, in my opinion.

I felt like it was the perfect addition to my unit on ...
I only recently found out about this story. As a result, I felt like it was the perfect addition to my unit on ABC books for my kindergarten students!

Harold's ABC
This is not your typical ABC book! Harold and his purple crayon draw a letter which turns into something that uses that letter as a skeleton, and starts with the letter. For instance the letter K builds a kite. My four year old grandson loved it! He thought it was funny to have a crayon make a letter which makes something.

Harold shows how kids can use their imagination
A classic, with appeal for many ages.

Lovely book, not a good place to start teaching the alphabet though
I love the Harold books, I have all that I can find. While this is an interesting journey for Harold through the alphabet, there are two things I find difficult about it. One, I've been told it's best to teach your child the small case alphabet at first, and this is all upper case. Also some of the words don't start with the phonic sound, which isn't great.I think this was written a long time ago, so I can forgive it, and I still love it, and will no doubt form part of teaching my little one the alphabet as she gets a bit older, but for those looking for the perfect book to start teaching their child the alphabet - this isn't it!
