This book is an amazing read. Very informative in training techniques. Easy to read. Tons of photos and illustrations throughout every chapter helping with the explanations, wonderful for the visual learner. Very detailed in helping an owner figure out if their dog would be a right fit in SAR and/or which area of SAR would be best. I purchased this book because a dog I recently adopted is showing true potential for SAR. I looked at many books and reviews and decided this book would be my starting point. I'm glad I did! I couldn't put the book down. Not only did I learn about the SAR dog, I also learned about being a handler as far as if I would be able to handle it physically, mentally and emotionally. Something that probably isn't considered at first by some people being so excited about getting their dog involved. Also explains very well the different jobs/leadership roles in a volunteer SAR unit. I've read a few other books since on other areas of dog and I'm actually going to read this book again! I have years of experience working with dogs but not in SAR and this book really helped me understand and helped me decide. Also, explains how to train extra commands, ones that I think you could use in your home or add to your training to have fun with your dog(s), if not going into SAR. Even if you just want to learn more about dogs in general to be more knowledgeable, this is the book!

I need to read other books specifically on training myself as a handler and SAR operator, but man was this a good book for dog training! It gives you an extensive overall look at things, with details and a section on actual training that was very easy to understand. Also a chapter on the politics of Canine SAR, which was very helpful to get an idea for how things look.Looking forward to implementing the things I’ve learned here. :)

Great book with a lot of awesome training ideas.

I've purchased multiple books on this topic. This one is by far the best in terms of supplying useful information on training.

This book was recommended to me by a number of veteran K9 trainers and it has proved to be the simplest and most strait forward guide to starting a SAR dog I have found. Myself and multiple team members have used this book as our training plan and love how it walks you through all the steps with tests along the way as well as advice on trouble shooting any problems that may arise.

I am only a little ways into Ready and I have to say that I feel differently about many of the things I 'knew' about dog training. I put a lot of time personally training my last shepherd Cappy. He was an amazing dog in so many ways, but sometimes made the wrong choices (don't we all). The author's thoughts on fostering the dog's intuition over strict obedience make a lot of sense. Cappy once ran straight down a cliff to come when I was calling. I know it is going to be hard to train a dog that knows when to think for himself and when to just be a good boy and trust my judgment but can't wait to get started.

Very comprehensive and very helpful. I love the levels that really break it down into how to begin training the dog and then also what I should expect from my dog at each level. I would definitely recommend.

If you are already involved in SAR or wishing to get involved with SAR (especially dogs) then get this book. I have been a SAR dog handler for quite a number of years and always tell people to read this book from cover to cover before even thinking of getting a dog for SAR. Cant rate it highly enough.
