Works well
I'm capturing home video via an old S-VHS deck and it seems to give me good S-VHS video conversion to HDMI which I then capture to my Mac using Quicktime. I see a bit of overscan artifacts at bottom few lines of video, but that could easily be my 30yo deck (but gives the captured video that old-timey look LOL) or stuff they used to add to analog video years ago that should have been captured because it was there. The captured video display is much better than I expected. (I'm actually very surprised the mechanics still work on my old VCR; guess that's a +1 for old Mitsubishi VCRs. Note I first inserted an old pre-recorded tape I was willing to sacrifice in case the mechanism ate it.) The only minus for the converter is that the audio plugs don't directly attach to the VCR (but it seems all converters have female plugs); but finding RCA patch cords (M-M) lying around was easy. So while the S-Video plugs right in, the audio plugs don't; make sure you have patch cords available.Update: After looking at some other direct VHS to USB converters, many reviews mentioned sound issues. In transferring a tape with 35mins of content, the sounds at the end still seemed synced. (Now if I could just go back in time and ask the next-door neighbor to not mower his lawn right then...). I tried both the 720p and 1080p switch positions and I find the 1080p has a few more artifacts from S-Video (and no, I wasn't expecting HD video, just wanted to make sure I was sampling the analog signal at a high enough rate (see Nyquist-Shannon)) than the 720p position so I'll convert all my tapes at 720p. And it seems that export from QuickTime at 480p was good enough because of the S-VHS source material and half the file size. Maybe I'll spend the 25bucks and try using an outside service and compare quality?

Use to connect old analog video devices to digital TVs or monitors.
Works well for converting output from old analog devices to input to new digital TVs or monitors. I have noticed the 1080P output is not as good as 720P. There's some overscan on the right side of the screen at 1080P that doesn't appear at 720P. This happened on two different devices, one connected via composite video and the other connected via S-Video. Otherwise, the video quality is pretty good considering its converting an analog signal to HDMI from a device that's 30 years old. Saved me from having to buy a separate old analog monitor for my 8-bit Atari.

Works.
Works as intended. Bought to hook up an old camcorder to watch old home videos. Not sure if it's the product or maybe the videos are deteriorating but the whites are I bit blown out and the darks are too dark. Can't say for sure if it's the product so 5 stars.

Did what I expected after HDMI digtal audio was correctly saved as stereo.
I have edited this review from 3 to 5 stars after discovering a setup problem which is described below.Merely wanted HDMI to RCA standard converter, but also rescaled wide definition, wide screen into standard definition format. Is useful for viewing guide on standard definition TV connected to high-definition source since it de-stretches the horizontal picture. The TV guide would be truncated without the rescaling. However, the audio only occasionally worked. I discovered that the intermittent audio was actually a setup problem with the AT&T U-verse VIP1200 DVR/receiver. The digital audio needs to be saved as stereo in the options box in the DVR on screen setup and not surround sound format. Apparently, a power glitch had reset a bit in the DVR memory or it had never been properly saved and was ambiguous resulting in random behavior. This error resulted in the HDMI source in having no audio.

May not be what you want
This item works just fine. However, if you are looking to play VHS tapes, VCR to Ultra HD television, and have it display in the original 4:3 aspect ratio, you will be disappointed. Unless you have more control over the display aspect ratio on your television than I have on mine, you will be stuck with a stretch 16:9 image.

Great for the price, but not great overall
You can tell from the pictures that the colors are fine on the composite output, but with the S-Video they are very saturated. I bought this at the same time as the Startech VID2HDCON2, and although it's more than triple the price, ($86) you get what you pay for. The unit gets very warm during operation and the cables/box/HDMI connector all feel very cheap. With it getting so warm, I can't imagine it will last very long. But hey, for $23, an S-Video converter that will do 720p or 1080p (honestly no difference in output), that is one of the only contenders in that price range. I'll be using the Startech to play my old school games and only use this as a backup or return it.
