Too much flex and cracking at the wire port
I have been riding FSA Energy Wing Compact 44cm aluminum bars for years and really like the fit. I sweat a lot in Florida so I replace corroded bars annually as preventive maintenance. This time I decided to upgrade to the carbon version so that I would not have to worry about corrosion based failures.Sad choice. Before I even installed them I felt like they had a lot of flex for a high end part. Once installed and I rode them for the first 30 mi I knew the flex was way more than I wanted.I adjusted the position slightly and went out two days later for another 30 mi. While out I noticed a bulge in the carbon right next to the stem. When I got home I pulled the stem cap and bars off and found the delamination and cracking around the wire port as shown in the photos.During initial install and when adjusting the position I followed the FSA instructions. Star pattern torque sequence and no more than 5 nm tq even though they state 6 nm max.The wire port is too wide and winds up being too close to the edge of the stem where the clamp pressure is.The fit was good and they were comfortable to ride but the flex was disconcerting and did not inspire confidence in the build quality. If I could give these 0 stars I would. Disappointed in FSA. I don’t understand the pursuit of grams over strength especially to this degree where it results in a weak, flexy, and crack prone product.
