From Publishers Weekly Bestselling novelist Sheldon's memoir is reminiscent of his colorful novels, a rags-to-riches yarn replete with struggle, an indomitable hero and eventual glamour. It opens with a 17-year-old Sheldon preparing to commit suicide in Chicago in 1934. "[L]onely and trapped," he wanted to attend college but couldn't afford it. Thankfully, his father intervened, and the young man got a new lease on life. He went from being an RKO theater usher to a struggling songwriter, then a top-flight Hollywood screenwriter in a few short years. For the next 30-odd years, Sheldon wrote and directed films, meeting studio honchos and stars like Kirk Douglas, Judy Garland and Marilyn Monroe. The author's impressive achievements include a WWII flying stint, a screenwriting Oscar for 1947's The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer, a Tony for writing the 1959 Broadway hit Redhead, the creation of four classic TV series (including I Dream of Jeannie) and several bestsellers (Bloodline; The Sands of Time; etc.). Yet these accomplishments came with bouts of depression and the death of a child. While the book is long on Sheldon's Hollywood and television days, it skimps on his domestic and publishing lives. Still, that shouldn't stop Sheldon's legions of fans from lapping this up. Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. A complete surprise to me. Such remarkable and varied talent.
I chose to read Sharon's life story, because he has been my favorite author for over 25 years. I wish I could have been able to meet him. My sister and I were reading this at the same time and continued to compare notes. We loved his life history.

A Good Book for a Hollywood Junkie
A really good read. The Other Side of Me takes you through the life and career of Sidney Sheldon writer of many movies, novels and TV shows like I Dream of Jeannie. The chapters are all short and written like one story taken out of his career and the next chapter moves on to something else. The only thing I didn't really like was he didn't spend a lot of time on his TV shows and would have liked to seen him go into depth on especially working with the cast of Jeannie. Otherwise, I really enjoyed it and it's a must for anyone who wants a good story about what happens behind the camera.

Sidney Sheldon is one of the people I admire most. He is a master of the novel and my favorite author. It is amazing how many different types of creative work he was successful in. I look forward to reading his personal story. It is really surprising to see how many television shows, movies, and other projects he was involved.

Outstanding!
After you finish this book, you will wish you had read it a couple years earlier so you could have had a chance to meet this great American. I have known for a long time that Sheldon was a great author but had no idea that he had lived the ultimate American Dream before he started writing so late in life. The book inspired me to read his fiction and he is now one of my favorite authors. In his fiction, you will see many of the characters from his life. This is a great rags to riches story!

Sidney--you died too young.
A good memoir of a fine writer. Always nice to read a good autobiography or memoir of a writer who has sold millions of books.
