Fashion in the Time of William Shakespeare: 1564–1616 (Shire Library, 785)

If you're looking for a book about the history of Elizabethan fashion, this ain't it chief. This book seems confused about what it's trying to be. It's not a history of Elizabethan costume for sure-- the descriptions and definitions of clothing are sorely lacking, and way too much time is spent pointlessly referencing Shakespeare. The Shakespeare is honestly the worst part-- why mention Shakespeare so many times for absolutely no reason other than to say, hey, look, Shakespeare talked about breeches once! The author also never references the portraits in her text, and she also doesn't ever get to her main point, which is why did people wear the clothes that they did? I still don't know why people wore ruffs. Or why women wore farthingales. This is a book for amateurs, and is more appropriate for high school students than it is for anyone seriously interested in the history of fashion. That said, the portraits the author chose are all spectacular.

Flea furs, bum rolls, gorgets, ruffs and muffs in all their glory! As others have noted this is not a large book, but what is here is splendid. Every page is packed with lavish illustration and interesting text. Much enjoyed.

A short, fun read. Very informative and with good illustrations. If you want a short overview of fashions during the time of Shakespeare, this book is it.

Good introduction and a fun read, but nothing really new or outstanding for a historic costumer. This is a great book for a general overview, it is a quick read with lots of pictures and references. It is a great place to begin a study of this time period's fashion, and would be great for a general survey course, but it is not or the serious historical costumer.
