Whoops! Our New Flatmate Is A Human: An Urban Fantasy Comedy (Susan Hall Investigates Book 1)

The Value of Determination
Susan Hall was totally committed to a job she desired, despite dislike of her parents for it and strange events around her. A fun, quick read as she proves her worth as an investigating reporter to mail a murderer.

Excellent genre combination.
While not the best writing, this is overall an excellent book. The story is fantastic. It combined mystery, urban fantasy and plucky girl reporter genres extremely well. There are distractions and red herrings that still prove to all be relevant in the greater world. The characters are distinct and well realized. It's a bit obscure about the central mystery of the story, but then, that's sort of the point, and makes for a really clever presentation, but it does make it feel a bit aimless at times.Keep in mind this takes place in the UK, and it is very British. The diction can be jarring if you're not used to British idioms and slang.

Great Concept
I really enjoyed this mystery. And it has great characters with issues going on with all the flatmates. The heroine is a human, an investigative reporter. She moves in with 3 flatmates in a four bedroom apartment. She shares with a wizard, a werewolf, and a vampire. And they do not want her to know they are supernatural people. Great fun. And a great mystery to boot.

I had high hopes, but so far not my cup of tea
I am on the fence about this series. I've read all three, but will leave this review of all of them with this first one instead of leaving one for each. Let me start by saying that I love the witch PI series, the stories are funny and the mysteries are all solved by the end of the of the book, but this series is a different matter altogether. The only problem I see with this for myself, is that I wasn't expecting it and unless the next intallments come out as quickly (which they haven't so far) as the witch PI books, I will not be able to maintain enough interest to keep me buying the next book.First, I have read a lot reviews over the years and I know that many people cannot tolerate multiple story lines from different points of view. If you are one of those readers, you will probably not like this series. There are four major and for the most part, (for me at least) difficult to like characters who all have their own storyline, while you also have the backstory that involves them all. Like the witch PI series, there is a lot of eating going on. Always sitting around the breakfast table complaining about one thing or the other. Usually the lack of money, which there really is no one to blame for that but themselves. In essence, what we have is a group of roommates sharing an apartment. For the most part, they are typical of a lot of young people. Immature, self absorbed, obnoxious, obtuse and sometimes downright cruel. With little or no manners, the lead an antagonistic relasionship with each other and those around them. I assume that this is supposed to be funny like the other series and I am usually a fan of British humor, but reading this is like being a ghost doomed to watch these young adults whine their way through life while making every stupid decision that can possibly be packed into the story. Can you really complain that you are broke, while going in to work late, leaving early and taking days off on a regular basis? But then, they always seem to have money for everthing from buying fairy houses, eating out or decorating. By the end of the third book, I really couldn't understand why they were all still living together. And, as someone else mentioned, I certainly hope that at some point in the other series, since Jill is supposedly the strongest witch alive now and a member of the council, that the laws could be altered so that human/sup pairings didn't wind up in broken families for no really good reason. The amount of abducted supernaturals leaving families behind to fend for themselves with no explaination is really abhorrent.Let's take the characters individually:Neil the wizard. Just the sort of person most people avoid. A liar, a cheat, a theif and someone who doesn't mind throwing his roommates under the bus if it would benefit him in some way, especially if money is to had. He is his own worst enemy and proves that karma is alive and well.Charlie the werewolf. Sweet and obviously a candidate for People magazine's sexiest man alive issue, he is clueless, self-deprecating and allows himself to be used as a doormat by his roommates, other tenants, boss, family, friends and fairy freeloaders.Dorothy the vampire. That person you know, that hates eveything and everybody. Always angry and saying nasty things to everyone around her, she would probably be better off living alone.Susan the human. Thrust upon everyone by the landlord of an apartment building full of supernatural beings, she spends a lot of time running around in circles following leads to stories that she doesn't even believe are true and so far, over the course of three books, has only managed to print one story. She's a bit arrogant, bossy, quick to judge without any reasonable evidence and quite the thorn in everyone else's side. Then you have the incidental characters:Molly. Dorothy's co-worker. Honestly, if I worked with someone so untrustworthy and always trying to fix me up with a man I didn't even like, I would be forced to do something a lot worse than having her clean a stock room full of cobwebs.Donny, the man Molly is trying to get Dorothy to like. Oh boy. Every woman's nightmare, but maybe that's the point. Like most men, thinks he's god's gift and just won't take no for an answer. And my personal pet peeve because I've had to deal with it myself, he refuses to call her Dorothy and instead calls her Dot, either because he's really stupid or doesn't care that she hates being called that. Even though this is typical male behavior seriously, I would find employment elsewhere rather than put up with the daily dose of Molly and Donny. Neither one of them is worth it.Socky, the ghost in Neil's room and Mad Matilda the ghost from the basement. If these two had any personality whatsoever, they might be tolerable, but they don't seem to have any redeaming value once you get to the third book.Jill from the other series shows up briefly a couple of times over the course of these three books, as does a few other characters from the other series.Second, this series is not like the other in that most of the storyline doesn't come to any sort of conclusion. I assume that this series will be one long episodic tale where various stories will end when the authors sees fit to do so along the way, but it won't happen by the end of each book. So, if you are another sort of reader who doesn't like cliffhangers or unresolved issues, you may also want to steer clear. You are going to need to be in this series for the long haul and be patient if you start reading it.In conclusion, I guess I was expecting this series to be more like the other series and that was my mistake. But, when you have so many reviewers that will simply throw out a 5 star rating to stay on an advanced reader list or give it a 1 star rating with the only reason being that it was boring and to give it a pass, doesn't really help. For the most part, this series is a bit tedious. There were a lot of times I lost interst simply because there wasn't really anything going on other than filler and I found myself looking for other things to do until I could work up the courage to continue on. And I did. Ms. Abbott doesn't really seem to get around to the good stuff in this series until the end of a book and then just stops and leaves it hanging. But after reading all three in a row, I can say that once you get to that next book, it's just more of the same. When the fourth book comes out, I will read it, but if this series continues to drag on the way it has so far, I will probably give up on it and stick to the other series.

The Book is Better Than The Title
Title is whimsical, but the book is actually well fleshed out. While it's light reading, it has a decent plot, and good characters. I liked all the main characters by the end... even Dorothy.

This book took a little bit to get into .The flow was a little off but in the end a good read.

Great reading and interesting character!
Adel Abott has created an entertaining paranormal comedy with a set of flatmates who will provide many surprises in the series to come. I could not put this book down.

Solid first-in-series book
This is a solid first-book-in-a-series. It gives enough back story and detail to open the series, with good world building. I hope to see more character growth as we follow the adventures of Susan and her flatmates.

Great fun to read
The first in a series about a young woman reporter who inadvertently becomes the 4th flatmate in a flat where the other 3 are a werewolf, a vampire and a witch, and the antics of the latter 3 to prevent her from discovering the truth about them. Simply written but decently edited and great fun to read. I find it annoying, however, that Amazon prices the first in a series at 99p to get readers interested, and then the rest are priced at £3, £4, or more. This type of book really isn't worth more than £2 at the most, as they are simple and relatively short.

Fun read!
First in the new series by Adele Abbott, and it felt like I was reading the same Witch PI Series just from a different perspective. That's not to say I did not enjoy it, I did, but I kinda d of wanted something a little different. It will be interesting to see the characters grow as the series continues, so looking forward to that. Not a big fan of Susan at the moment, but I do enjoy her flatmates, Dorothy, Charlie and Neil. All in all a quick, fun read, and if you enjoy Adele Abbott's other books then you will enjoy this one!

All rather juvenile
I think I made a mistake and this book is aimed at children/young adults. It's a bit twee. Having said that, it was amusing and will probably be OK as a series. But definitely not for adults

A bit dissapointing ☹️
This was the first book I had read from Adele and while the writing is good and the characters are inyeresting and fun, the plot seemed to go nowhere. I actually didnt finish the book as I got about 80% thru it and nothing had happened plot wise. I’ll go back and finish it eventually. Maybe it gets better in the second book.
