Racism and Roses
You can right now buy each book individually for £9.49, or spend more than this to get the Collector's Boxed Set, which is a bit weird, as you usually save when buying a pack. So check the pricing.I really enjoyed the stories written by Angie Thomas that tackle topics that I do not usually read about or face in my life, including; racism, poverty, and social injustice. Although these stories are about sixteen year old girls and marketed at the young adult, they are both a great read and I would definitely recommend them to adults too. The language is probably not appropriate for under tens, and I am giving it to my thirteen year old daughter to read after me.My review of On The Come Up:If you have a burning ambition then you aim high and Bri is a sixteen year old girl finding her place in the world whilst also aiming for the sky as she has rapping talent. Bri is on the come up. I was thrown at the start when she kept calling her mum Jay, so remember that when you start reading. I will not tell you why as that is revealed in the story. I really enjoyed the story. We should all dream big and have the same chance of success but this is life, and real life is not a fairy tale.A review of The Hate U GiveStarr Carter navigates between the poverty-stricken area she has grown up in and the posh prep school she attends. Her life is flipped upside down when she is the sole witness to a police officer shooting her best friend, Khalil, who was unarmed. Starr finds herself even more torn in two. A story about strength and finding justice. But is justice black and white?Great books that open your eyes and widen your horizons. A must read for young teenagers who do not face racism or injustice as part of their upbringing, as the world is not full of roses.

Spoiler-free: A good box set of both Angie Thomas books but the 'box' is not the best...
This special boxed set of two Angie Thomas books is a great treat for anyone who doesn't already own these two books. 'The Hate U Give' and 'On the Come Up' the first two books by Angie Thomas, are included here with their original UK covers. The books come in an outer sleeve-type box that's made of card and fits nicely together and look good on any shelf.I won't go into too much detail about the books but if you've read even one of the books you'll know that they are a powerful read and are definitely worth reading considering the subject matter, for example in 'The Hate U Give' a black teenager and friend of the main character Starr is shot unfairly by police one night with Starr as the only witness. Can she go to the police seeing as it was one of their own who shot her friend, and what will her white friends at the school that she goes to across town (in a white neighbourhood) or the black people of the community she lives in think if she does or doesn't?Although the titles are an interesting and poowerful read I do feel I should point out that although the books are aimed at teenagers, younger teens who are more sensitive (incluing being sensitive to swearing in books (to use 'The Hate U Give' as an example again, it's full of the f and s swear words throughout) may not enjoy these as much as older teens who are more comfortable reading such things. For anyone though who enjoys Angie Thomas's books though, or who wants to get the chance to read them then this is a good box set to get.Unfortunately, despite saying that this is a great box set (and I always like a box set!) I am a bit disappointed with the actual 'box' you get. With other boxed sets of books you often get a nice and very sturdy box to hold these books in. But this one though is just made of simple card and is simply held into a box shape by a flap at the back which you can open, meaning you can then collapse the whole thing flat when there are no books inside. The disappointing thing about this is that when trying to put both books back into the 'box' at the same time, the flap ended up bending some of the pages of one book so be aware that what you're acutally getting is a bit of a flimsy box compared to some other box sets that are out there. However if you don't own any of the books yet, or just want to own the pair, this is still a good buy as you get that outer sleeve-type box with the added images on the outside (even if it is just made of card).-Thanks to Walker Books for a free copy for review.ps - I don't know what the problem is with a reviewer mentioning pricing as the current price shown is significantly lower than rrp, and the rrp is actually the cost of both books at rrp, so the box you get is essentially free :)

Highly recommend this lovely box set
I have a passion for box book sets, where I can sit and read a whole collection one after the other.Although the author Angie Thomas is a former teen rapper On The Come Up grabbed my attention, with a young sixteen year old Bri who wants to be one of the greatest rappers of all time, and why not want that? Most young teenagers have some sort of an idea what they want to do with their lives and to me there's nothing wrong anyone at any age wanting to famous in some kind of way.The story is quite heartbreaking where Bri has had a tough life with her mother who has an addiction and her fathers death.I did feel for quite sad for Bri who sometimes she gets in to trouble at school. For Bri it was an incredible new record for her if she hadn't been sent to the principal's office.Bri had been rapping since she was ten, but she didn't even know if she was good enough . Will she make it as rapper? Some of the scenes are about poverty that's heartbreaking with no food in the fridge, but with first love of rapper music.I know On The Come Up this is going to be a very popular book. But for any reader that hasn't read On The Come up or The Hate You Give, by Angie Thomas, who is a great writer that can put so many different emotions into each page to draw readers in.I highly recommend this beautiful box collection by walker Books. The Hate You Give is the first book by Angie Thomas., that is a page turner. You simply can't fail to love both books. I would like to say a huge very big thank you to walker books for sending me this lovely box set.
