Escape artist child, read update too
I love this thing. The design is so simple, it's easy to use (I even uploaded a video of me using it one handed), it's sturdy, and while easy to use, too strong for a young child to be able to squeeze and release it.I bought this for a trip to visit family. I have a nonverbal 4yo escape artist that has no fear and no understanding of the dangers he will put himself in. He wears a tracking device that alerts us if he gets more than about 50 feet away from us, we have special locks on all of our doors at home, it's serious business keeping him contained and safe with us.I was terrified about this trip, visiting places like hotels and people's houses that are not set up to contain a child like mine.Just used this in our hotel last night and it works! I was surprised with how simple it was and how easy to use, yet sturdy and you still need a little strength and coordination to squeeze the silver piece and push it down the toothed black piece at the same time. I think it will be great for keeping my son safely inside when we need him to (at night, while I'm taking a shower, etc). This is giving me so much piece of mind. I'm going to order a 2nd one to use on family's door to their garage. I wasn't as worried about that door since their garage door openers are up very high, but now that I see how well it works, I want a 2nd one, possibly even a 3rd one, anyway to be able to use at friend's houses regularly. This, ironically, opens up a lot of doors for us to be able to spend time at friend's houses instead of always having to have them at our inescapable house. My son hasn't put it through his own test yet, it will be a very rigorous test, I assure you, and I will update it when he does and we will see how this lock holds up!**update after 7 day trip**The lock worked perfectly. Our son could not escape. That made it worth its weight in gold to me. Such incredible peace of mind!!! It worked on the hotel door, front/exterior door of a house, and an interior bedroom door. I am planning on buying 2 more so I can use them while at friend's houses.I did notice a few things that I think need to be mentioned:1) door handles are at children's face level. Duh, right? But, I hadn't thought about this until I installed it and saw my 4yo run for the door to try to open it, and he didn't see that thing coming right at his eyeball until the last second. The metal shaft sticks out 3-4 inches when installed, so beware. This could be remedied with some sort of childproofing foam/material, but you'd most likely have to remove it every time you uninstall it and then reapply it when you install.2) the black metal shaft bends a little too easily. It still functioned mostly perfectly, did make it a little loose whne he'd try to yank open the door, but it held. If he does this repeatedly, I can see it possibly breaking from the stress of being bent, then bent back to original shape.3) there is a potential of damage to the door if you have someone that will try to yank the door open. This did not happen, but I was always quick to stop him. Had I not stopped him quickly every time, I think it could have dented the door.I am still planning on buying more so we can actually go to friends houses and relax a little, knowing he's not escaping. I still recommend them 100%.

Keeps my Father who has Dementia from being able to open doors!
So thankful I decided to try these! I took my 87 YO Father with me to my daughters who recently purchased a new home. NONE of the doors can be locked from the inside. My Father has Dementia. This was our second visit. I was a nervous wreck the entire first trip worried about him falling down the 10 levels of brick steps out their front door. This was the only thing we were able to find short of changing every door knob out that kept him from being able to open the doors and get out! They WORK! He jiggled and pulled but was never able to figure out how to get them off. (I bought three). Fortunately, the noise from that is also a plus. If I miss seeing him wandering around I always can figure out where he is by the sound of all that. Now. I will have to agree with another comment I saw. They are can be ANNOYING. When they are removed they fall apart. The “blade” falls out of the groove it slides thru when they are installed. (You will have to look at picture of one and hopefully be able to figure out what I mean ). However, for the peace of mind they give me that is not a deal breaker. No damage to doors, walls, no scews. I did go with this more expensive brass looking one - it just looked more durable than the cheaper one. Good purchase!

Works best on flat jams
Bought these to keep small kids inside a vacation home at night. These work best on flat trim like you would find in a hotel. Worked with some finagling on doors with standard door trim like you find in a house. The fit was sloppy and loose but worked to keep small kids in. Not sure if it would work on keeping adults out.

Not for those who are prone to panic or those with a weaker grip.
While this is relatively simple to use, it does take a bit of practice to slide the lock. I would not suggest this for someone prone to panic in stressful situations or someone with a weak grip. If you don't squeeze the lock hard enough it will not budge. If you squeeze the lock too hard it will not budge either. I would not want it on a door with children in the room.

Poor design. Don't waste your time
It doesn't work on any of the doors I've tried in on. The hook that is inserted into the strike plate is too short and simply pivots out and the lock falls to the floor when someone tries to open the door. Poor design. Don't waste your time. I also bought the Secure Portable Door Lock (SPDL-1) and it works great. A much better product.

Someone had opened my deadbolt during the night...
Update 2021 (bought and use this EVERY TIME I'm home in 2018).Like every night, I came home from work and used this as I closed the door. Later that evening as I was showering I heard someone trying to open my door. At first I thought they were just at the wrong apartment. I went to see who it was AND THE DEAD BOLT OPENED! When the door did not open the person began to, what sounded like, shoulder the door! I yelled "I'm on the phone with 911 go away!" ... It was maintenance. They misread the 'ticket' on a 'problem' apartment. Not only does this keep the bad out, it keeps 'mistakes' out. Those 2 men would have walked in with me in the shower. If used as directed, this works! I've used it in motels, for peace of mind. Excellent product.Live in a seedy complex in the city, all I can afford. One morning I woke up, walked down the hall to turn on the lights. Someone had opened my deadbolt during the night. I always do the deadbolt because I hang my keys on it in case of fire (yes we get about 2/ month. This place is harsh). I shook all day at work, signed up for the best self-defense course I could find, and now use this lock every time I'm home, not just at night.

Bent easily
I tested this in a regular hotel door. Tried to open the door with just the normal level of strength it takes to open an unlocked door. The little tooth thing bent and jammed.
