This is as good of a read as any book in this genre. Period
I've read both of Mr. Hollerman's books and enjoyed both. This books drives along a little different than the first book. This isn't a negative comment - just a comment. What I really enjoyed about this book was the development of the characters. I began to understand how each of the key players ticked. He also did an amazing job of stitching the story together. If the book were a play there would be three if not more distinct sets. The retreat, the town, and the military base (rather the town the military is occupying.) and Mr. Hollerman does a fantastic job of interweaving the three stories into one very fluid, very engrossing tale. I basically loved the book. The characters sometimes get on my nerves, but I have to realize that I get on people's nerves (it's true...it's true..) and sometimes I'm saying, "What are you thinking?!?" or "Why on earth did you do that?!?" But the comment isn't because their actions are unbelievable, it's because I'm so engrossed in the story that I'm IN the story. That's the mark for me right there - that's how I know I"m in a book that I am enjoying to the max - when I find myself in the story, "What would Robert do??" Kind of thing.I know I've written a lot without saying much about what the story is about. There are 60 some-odd reviews that do that. I just wanted to write what it was that I enjoyed about the book. It does have some surprises. It has a few twists and turns. It has some happy moments and some sad moments, and at all times it gives pause to reflect and think, "What WOULD I do?" "Is this really how America would unfold in light of such an event? I think Mr. Hollerman is pretty close. Of course how in the world would I know because none of us have lived through an event like this. But I did spent a decade and 1/2 in the Army, and I have traveled to over 21 countries, so I have seen and learned a lot about the soul of the human being. The good, and the bad. So I think, based on my personal experiences, that Mr. Hollerman hit the nail on the head in how he interprets the realm of the possible in terms of how people will develop, how communities, cities and even the military will develop in such a time of unimaginable crisis. One more comment. The author is a man of class. He wrote an exciting book about the end times (practically) and didn't have to litter it with a bunch of bad language. I personally believe it takes a better writer to write colorfully, which he did, without using profanity. Hey, when I was in the Army, I invented cuss words, but that was all BC, now I really enjoy reading books that don't remind me of just how foul my mouth used to be. :)BLUF: Buy the book. If you haven't read the first book "EMP", still buy this book, but don't read it until you read EMP. Sit back, fix you a cup of coffee (or Pepsi Max) and enjoy!!!If I could say one thing to Mr. Hollerman - one request - one area to improve - it would be this: "Sir, please do not make us wait so long for the third installment!!!!!!" Do you realize how many books I had to read for fillers in waiting for this release?!?!?!

Equipping Modern Patriots: The Aftermath
This book is the sequel to the first Equipping Modern Patriots book by Jonathan Hollerman. This novel picks up not far after the first book ends. The scope of the story in this installment begins to expand beyond the main character and his family to the community of survivors that have come to work together to make it to this point in time. About half of the book switches context and tells the story from the perspective of as US Army Colonel who was tasked with completing tasking in the general area of the main character and the town they live in. In terms of disaster suspense/thrillers, which I think it what this book is categorized as, this book is dark at times. It does not spare details about how bleak the resulting day to day life potentially will be after a targeted attack. It extrapolates on this to a global scale and touches on how negatively impactful such an act would be on all of civilization, not just the United States. This expanded view is not something that is particularly touched on in the first book and provides a thought provoking perspective on the bigger picture of such an act, that might now have been considered by the reader, simply reading the first book. For all of the doom and gloom that seems to have established itself as normalcy in this post-apocalyptic time, there are plenty of situations in the book that play out to re-affirm ones faith in humanity. The town that this book revolves around is a constant reminder of the potential success that can be seen from a collection of people working together to help each other out in a difficult time. Throughout both books, the unwavering constant presented to the reader is the main characters attempt at doing what they consider to be the morally "right" thing to do and their motivation to survive. Overall, I found myself enjoying this book more than the first.

... a way to grip you from page to page like a good novel should
The Equipping Modern Patriots series are written in such a way to grip you from page to page like a good novel should, but also Jonathan Hollerman has packed them with so much information that you wouldn't even know that you are getting until you reevaluate your own personal survival plans. They really make you think about different scenarios and game plan many different possibilities that one would encounter in a SHTF scenario. EMP takes the story of two different survival groups, one the main actors family, and two the main actors survival group and shows the many things that they have to go through to survive in a collapsed society. This series is a must read for anyone serious about preparing for hard times. In this second series you will not be disappointed. I am on my second time reading through both the first and second book and have be able to glean more from them than I would have ever dreamed of from a novel. I can't wait to get the third and final book in this series to see where it goes from the second. These books were deffinetly well thought out and done right and in such a way to be more valuable than just reading a novel. Get both one and two at the same time as you will not want to wait to get into the second one. If the third is out you might as well buy that one as well as you won't want to wait.

decent story.
I thought it would have been similar to the first volume as far as the story and characters, can't wait for the other books to be completedto get the story from the viewpoint of other character. the story is left open at the end so it could easily be carried on.

One of the better EMP stories I've read.
Totally got immersed in this series. It was a great read and yet still left me awaiting the authors next instalments. Everything seems well thought out, the characters, their flaws, and the events the faced.. I like the lack of a John Wayne hero type. Everyone is quite real and human. It's good to see someone portray the military as human and not all blind followers. There are the good and the bad in all groups and under pressure I'm sure some will choose their evil side to drive their decisions and others will be conflicted like Colonel Harris, yet choose the "right" path even when it but him at risk. I liked that it read longer than it's 338 pages, it didn't drag but read like a book much longer. Up there with some of the best grid down/emp stories I've read and now an author I will follow. Great story.
