National Geographic Walking Berlin: The Best of the City (National Geographic Walking Guide)

Gave me the geographic organization I needed
We enjoyed using this book for information about places we wanted to see. Sometimes, the paper book (especially if it's not too large), is better than a digital one. We left it on the ship's library on our return to US cruise. The information appeared to be accurate--especially the maps. I was sometimes confused about the area names as different sources didn't always share the same names. However, if you're going to spend some time in Berlin, and plan to walk (highly recommend that along with the excellent public transportation system), this book is a worthwhile investment.

Excellent guide to Berlin...
I've been to Berlin many times in the past 20 years and I was pleased to find a new guide to the city, "Walking Berlin", published by National Geographic. (There's also another book, "Walking Prague" by the same company.)Berlin is a very walkable city, particularly if you stay in the Mitte area. Mitte, part of the old East Berlin, has been developed since the fall of the Wall in 1989, and most of the tourist sites are within walking distance of hotels in that area. This book gives a very good description to all the spots - museums, historic buildings, parks, etc - with Mitte, but doesn't skimp on other neighborhoods of the city. The maps, in particular, are very good.I was impressed by the book. It doesn't give restaurants or hotels, except in a rather cursory manner, but that's not important. There are many other guides - particularly on-line - devoted to eating and sleeping in Berlin. This is a guide to the sights of Berlin, and it does a good job.

Just buy it, You'll Need It
Although I have never been to Berlin, I am planning a trip there and I will be bringing this book along. The maps are very detailed, with the different neighbourhoods outlined and the metro system fully laid out. The book is split up by neighbourhoods, right after the tours, which makes it easier to plan out your own time there. The different tours they give are very neat, and if you only have a select amount of time, or are bringing kids, or have a specific interest, there is a tour for you.The insider tips are great as well, as not everybody has a friend to take them around. The tips include good places to go, and when, and also most importantly, how to save money.I appreciated the travel tips section in the back, with helpful phrases, times to visit, and hotel information. This is a really great book if you are going to Berlin, as it has all the information you'd need but is not heavy or bulky. Just buy it!

Don't Be Misled By The Title
Berlin is a great city for walking in and around but this book barely scratches the surface. Superficial "neighborhood" walks offer nothing that is not available in other guides. Some of the major sites of interest , e.g. "Die Topographie des Terrors" are mentioned only in terms of taking "a detour past". And why is there not even a passing reference to Potsdam and Sanssouci? There are better and cheaper alternatives, e.g. Lonely Planet's "Pocket Berlin". I've rarely been so disappointed by a travel guide.
