Classic 80's FM sounds
All those classic DX7 sounds from the 80's that were on everything but went out of fashion have come round again to be actually very nice and usable.I have other synths but certain sounds from the FM2 are so clean and crystal sounding, I put them thru an nts-1 with Sinevibes Hollow reverb 👌I love that the FM2 is 6 voice poly, lots of sounds are to be found on the web and are easily transferred to this with the free Dexed app.

The Awesome Buzzy Bass in my Setup!
The media could not be loaded. I've got the Volca bug. I love them. Within 4 weeks during the lockdown, I had purchased 6 of them, including a stand, effects and a mixer. I have the Modular, Sample, Keys, FM, NuBass and Bass. The FM is my favourite but it does something quite different from the Volca bass which is great in its own right. I use the Volca Bass (thus far) to provide the buzzy undertones and breaks to upbeat dance music. It works awesomely as backing to the FM on top of a simple beat. The prominent feature is this is has 3 oscillators which can be utilized independently (with their own melody), or two together and one single, or all together for a rich, deep sound. When the oscillators are grouped it makes a richer sound and you have the ability to detune each too. This helps to create a little bit more depth and effect.Controls are fairly simple and even if you don't know much about synths, you'll understand what each feature does just by ear. It's important that you remember that the Function + Keys turn features on and off though. For detailed learning I would recommend Tony Horgans ebook.Another unique feature of the bass is the 'Slide' function which allows you to specify which notes slid into each other. Imagine a slide on a guitar. It also sounds a bit like a record scratching in some situations. Each one of the VCOs (oscillators) have Saw and Square waves to choose form and the LFO (low frequency oscillator) has a triangle and square wave option. These can be changed via function button and the corresponding keys. There's also a Sustain feature which holds the notes for a fraction longer. In my video which I posted, I'm only using 3 patterns (with slide effects) which I programmed and saved. I 'dance' between them using the memory button (and corresponding key). The FM is providing the lead, the sample the beat and the Keys the later pulse. If you're looking for the first Volca to buy, I think this one is definitely a candidate! It doesn't only produce low 'bass' sounds but high pitched sounds too, It's very versatile. I would however insist that it's paired with the FM or Sample - or ideally both! Careful though. These things are addictive!Thoroughly Recommended!

Back to the 1980s
Amazon tends to smush the Volca reviews together, so for the record I'm talking about the Volca FM. It's a compact, three-voice sound module that puts the six-operator FM model of the mid-80s Yamaha DX7 into a small box with a sequencer. It's fun but slightly awkward. It doesn't work all that well as an FM sound module because it doesn't respond to velocity over MIDI and it only has three-voice polyphony. There doesn't seem to be a way to chain several of them together. On the positive side it's mostly compatible with DX7 patches, of which there are thousands on the internet, although you have to use a third-party utility (Dexed) to send the data to the Volca FM. On the negative side it's only compatible with the original six-operator-sine-waves-only model of the DX7/9/7II, not the four-operator-with-different-waves model of the later DX11/TX81Z, so it's not compatible with the famous Lately Bass patch (for example). As such it's a kind of FM groovebox, akin to the Elektron Digitone, but the sequencer is very limited. There are sixteen patterns that can be chained together, but not made into a song, unless it's a simple 1-2-3-4 arrangement. The sequencer has very limited live control, so I have the impression it's mostly intended to play static basslines. I use an Arturia BeatStep as a sequencer instead. As a kind of FM version of the TB-303 however it makes a lot of sense. The front panel controls respond in real time, and the built-in patches - which are surprisingly good - all have articulation, so you can have a lot of fun playing sequences through it while mimicking filter sweeps, but with clashing digital FM sounds. The presets are a neat cross-section of the DX7's most famous sounds. The pianos, bells, flute etc are all pretty good, although this sadly highlights its limitations as a sound module. In theory it doesn't make a lot of sense, because Dexed is free, but the front panel articulation is an advance over the original DX synths and it has a decent chorus effect, so if you think of it as a cheap bass-box it's not too bad. It's also half the price of the cheapest second-hand DX100 and it'll send sync pulses to the other Volcas, so if you have some of the more unusual Volcas - the Modular, example - it's handy as a "normal" synthesiser. You can edit the patches deeply, but good luck with that. Good luck with that.

Volca Bass
The media could not be loaded. Great fun playing around with this little box. May get some more Volca's later on and make a bit of a setup.

Excellent DX7 Clone
Six voices instead of three like the original, allowing you to play double the notes at one time. Built in sequencer and arpeggiator in addition to the FM synthesizer. There's a lot going on here, so I ordered the book. All in all, a very good FM synthesizer, based on the OG, for not much money!

A lot of power in a little gem
It's not only a great little instrument but also a great way of learning how electronically made sounds can be used in musical compositions.

Perfecto

Love these Volca Micros
I'm starting to collect these things like special edition Lego sets. It's really fun to experiment with sounds. And create your own unique sounds you can capture to another device turn it into an instrument.
